Integrating Social Assistive Robots, IoT, Virtual Communities and Smart Objects to Assist at-Home Independently Living Elders: the MoveCare Project

Matteo Luperto et al.

Summary: The integration of Ambient Assisted Living frameworks with Socially Assistive Robots has been proven useful for monitoring and assisting older adults in their own home. This study presents the MoveCare system, which aims to provide long-term support to elderly individuals living alone and at risk of frailty. The results show that Socially Assistive Robots integrated with monitoring and stimulation platforms can be successfully used, but the long-term deployment of SARs introduces technical and organizational challenges.

Socially Assistive Robots' Deployment in Healthcare Settings: A Global Perspective

Laura Aymerich-Franch et al.

Summary: The deployment of socially assistive robots (SARs) in healthcare-related applications is an emerging field with limited research. Through documentary research, we examined 279 experiences of SARs deployments involving 52 different robot models in hospitals, elderly care centers, occupational health centers, private homes, and educational institutions worldwide. We identified a wide range of functions for SARs, including entertainment, companionship, telepresence, edutainment, monitoring, exercise promotion, testing and pre-diagnosis, and disinfection. Our work provides a comprehensive understanding of the current state of SARs' deployment in real healthcare scenarios and contributes to the understanding of their role in the healthcare sector.

Combining Cultural Probes and Interviews with Caregivers to Co-Design a Social Mobile Robotic Solution

M. Olivier et al.

Summary: The aim of this research is to study the social organization within institutions that serve dependent older adults and the potential impact of introducing a social robot. Through a co-design approach and behavioral observations, we aim to identify the necessary conditions for designing an acceptable human-robot interaction. Due to the Covid crisis, we had to use the cultural probes method combined with interviews to understand the daily work of health professionals. The analysis of the collected data revealed 5 recurrent themes and potential solutions with the use of a social robot, which are discussed in this article. The Cultural Probes approach, despite being time-consuming, proved to be effective in maintaining regular contact during the pandemic and providing valuable qualitative data.

Older adult perspectives on emotion and stigma in social robots

Jill A. Dosso et al.

Summary: This study aims to address barriers to social robot adoption by older adults and people living with dementia by discussing factors that can affect emotional connection to a social robot and considerations around using a social robot in public. The findings revealed that participants value preferred forms of communication with a robot and ways in which a robot can support connection between people. Additionally, participants have varying preferences for the emotional range and display features of a social robot. Furthermore, considerations around showing a robot to other people were discussed, with some participants suggesting that a robot could raise awareness of aging and dementia while others expressed concerns about stigma and negative attention.

Cobot and Sobot: For a new Ontology of Collaborative and Social Robots

Nicoletta Cusano

Summary: This article discusses the relationship between cobots and sobots, categorizing them as collaborative social robots. The difference between cobots and sobots lies in the development of AI, with cobots having potential sociality and sobots having actual sociality. The article emphasizes the importance of self-learning and autonomy for social robots. It concludes that the relationship between cobots and sobots is fundamental to the history and progress of Robotics.

Attention-based sensor fusion for emotion recognition from human motion by combining convolutional neural network and weighted kernel support vector machine and using inertial measurement unit signals

Yan Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper aims to explore hidden emotional states through human motions and proposes a novel approach using multiple IMU sensors for emotion recognition. The mapping relationship between emotion and human motion was established, and data for six emotional states were collected. A lightweight CNN was used to extract discriminative features, and an attention-based sensor fusion module was developed. A weighted kernel SVM model was constructed for emotion recognition, achieving a higher accuracy (99.02%) compared to similar studies. These findings contribute to the development of social robots with non-verbal emotional communication capabilities.

Verbal anthropomorphism design of social robots: Investigating users? privacy perception

Hanna Chung et al.

Summary: Many studies have shown that humanlike robots have advantages of emotional, functional, and relational interaction with users, but they also have disadvantages of privacy perception. Some researchers have suggested an optimal level of anthropomorphism that balances these aspects. This study explores the optimal level of verbal anthropomorphism of social robots through privacy perception. The results indicate that a medium-level verbal anthropomorphism is preferred in terms of privacy perception, while a high-level verbal anthropomorphism is preferred in emotional, functional, and relational aspects. The findings suggest the need for adaptable verbal anthropomorphism design based on conversation contexts for social robots.

Summary: This study focuses on exploring the role of touch in human-robot interaction, particularly in establishing trust and rapport between robots and individuals with diverse developmental or elderly backgrounds. By analyzing two social robots, SoCoRo and HuggieBot 2.0, the study aims to understand the impact of haptic protocols and motor mimicry based on findings from previous nonverbal communication studies. It also explores the potential of using robotic platforms as experimental laboratories to investigate the future of touch.

Transparent robots: How children perceive and relate to a social robot that acknowledges its lack of human psychological capacities and machine status

Caroline L. van Straten et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the way social robots are presented to children can influence their perception and formation of a relationship with the robot. This study investigates whether a social robot's own provision of transparent information about its abilities and limitations can alter children's perception and relationship with the robot. The findings reveal that when a social robot provides information, children experience decreased feelings of closeness and trust in the robot.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of customers' emotional state on how they evaluate service experiences after interacting with a service robot (SR). The findings show that customers in a neutral emotional state are more satisfied with the service provided by SRs. The study also reveals the mechanisms underlying this satisfaction and how SRs' sympathetic capabilities moderate this relationship.

EEG-Based Empathic Safe Cobot

Alberto Borboni et al.

Summary: An empathic collaborative robot (cobot) was developed to transmit fear from a human agent to the robot agent, creating a social circle of empathy and safety. Through an electroencephalographic (EEG) sensor worn by the human agent, the empathic safe brain-computer interface (BCI) was realized. The experiments showed that the peak EEG signal increased in the presence of uncomfortable movements of the cobot, confirming the results obtained from the subjects' questionnaires.
