Development and applications of slope and river monitoring system using low-power wide-area network technology

Achmad Hafidz et al.

Summary: The increase in heavy rainfall events has led to an increase in floods and slope failures, posing severe risks to human lives. Monitoring and early warning systems are crucial in mitigating the damage caused by natural disasters. This study introduces a new monitoring system utilizing low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs), which successfully collects measurement data with the help of radio wave propagation tests. However, there are still errors in the data and an unstable correlation between temperature and inclination data.

RFID Landslide Monitoring: Long-Term Outdoor Signal Processing and Phase Unwrapping

Arthur Charlety et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the use of passive RFID tags for monitoring landslide surface displacement over the past five years. This method is effective for slow displacements under 1cm per day and offers high spatio-temporal resolution at a relatively low cost. The paper proposes data-processing solutions, including a complex-smoothing unwrapping algorithm, multi-frequency merging operation, and multi-tag and multi-antenna phase combining method, to overcome challenges encountered with long-term outdoor RFID localization. These approaches significantly improve data availability and phase unwrapping, making RFID-based earth surface displacement monitoring a robust and accurate solution.

Estimating global landslide susceptibility and its uncertainty through ensemble modeling

Anne Felsberg et al.

Summary: This study assesses global landslide susceptibility using global satellite soil moisture observations. The study finds that global landslide susceptibility estimation contains uncertainty due to errors in the data, spatial mismatch, and generalizations in the model. To address the uncertainty, the study combines methods from the landslide community and meteorological modeling to create an ensemble of global landslide susceptibility maps. The study also perturbs the predictor variables to account for other uncertainty sources. The results show that including a topography-dependent perturbation improves the reliability of the uncertainty estimates.

Summary: LPWAN technologies such as LoRa are widely used for IoT applications requiring wide coverage and low energy consumption. Optimizing energy consumption models based on in-situ measurements is crucial for minimizing maintenance costs, especially as existing models often do not consider LoRaWAN protocol specifications. Research indicates that the number of nodes in a LoRaWAN network impacts energy consumption and limits the number of sensors that can be integrated due to collision probability.
