Tectonic evolution of the Triassic Songpan-Ganzi basin as constrained by a synthesis of multi-proxy provenance data

Yan Tang et al.

Summary: Through provenance analysis of samples from the Songpan-Ganzi basin, this study concludes that the basin had a stable and locally sourced sediment system, with different sub-basins receiving sediments from different areas, which is consistent with the remnant ocean model.

Devonian to Triassic tectonic evolution and basin transition in the East Kunlun-Qaidam area, northern Tibetan Plateau: Costraints from stratigraphy and detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology

Jiaopeng Sun et al.

Summary: This article focuses on the Late Paleozoic to Triassic period in the East Kunlun-Qaidam area, using various methods to study changes in provenance and the corresponding topographic and tectonic transitions. The findings contribute to our understanding of the assembly of northern Tibet and the tectonic evolution of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean.

Temporal changes in subduction- to collision-related magmatism in the Neotethyan orogen: The Southeast Iran example

Hadi Shafaii Moghadam et al.

Summary: Continental-arc igneous rock compositions change in response to the transition from subduction to collision, providing insights into the evolution of crust, lithosphere, and magma sources. The Urumieh-Dokhtar Magmatic Belt (UDMB) in Iran offers a natural laboratory to study these changes. Geochemical and geochronological data reveal different stages of magmatic activity, reflecting the processes of subduction, collision, and crustal thickening. The temporal changes in UDMB magmas are related to the response of the overriding plate to changes in the subduction geometry and collision events.

Late Triassic basin inversion of the Qiangtang Basin in northern Tibet: Implications for the closure of the Paleo-Tethys and expansion of the Neo-Tethys

Jian Wang et al.

Summary: The sedimentologic and tectonic records in the Qiangtang Basin reveal a negative basin inversion during the Late Triassic, indicating the closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean and the expansion of the Neo-Tethys Ocean. The basin inversion is characterized by a shift in sedimentary facies and a transition from marine to terrestrial erosion. The volcanic rocks and U-Pb ages suggest that the basin inversion was initiated by the Nadi Kangri bimodal volcanic eruption and marked the exhumation of the northern Qiangtang foreland basin. The initiation of Qiangtang rifting in the late Late Triassic is attributed to the rapid expansion of the Neo-Tethys Ocean.

A global temperature control of silicate weathering intensity

Kai Deng et al.

Summary: How silicate weathering responds to and regulates Earth's climate remain controversial. This study suggests that temperature has the primary control over weathering intensity globally, and the temperature-weathering feedback may be stronger in cold Earth. The researchers found that temperature affects silicate weathering significantly, while precipitation and topographic-lithological factors play smaller roles.

Chemical Mohometry: Assessing Crustal Thickness of Ancient Orogens Using Geochemical and Isotopic Data

P. Luffi et al.

Summary: Understanding how continental crust formed and evolved is one of the major goals of geology. Chemical composition of igneous rocks formed at modern convergent plate margins correlates with crustal thickness and elevation at the time of magmatism. Therefore, when averaged over local and regional scales, a series of chemical parameters act as excellent tracers of crustal thickness. These parameters in turn are used on ancient igneous rocks in order to determine crustal thickness and elevation of mountain ranges during magmatism; they are referred to as chemical mohometers and paleo-altimeters. Here, we review several proposed parameters and recommend new ones. We provide a MATLAB (R) app that ingests a variety of geochemical parameters and calculate paleocrustal thickness and elevation of diverse possible geologic applications.

Hydrological control of river and seawater lithium isotopes

Fei Zhang et al.

Summary: Seasonal changes in seawater lithium isotopes (ΔLi-7) were observed in Tibetan and Pamir rivers, with higher ΔLi-7 values during dry seasons compared to wet seasons. This global pattern is negatively correlated with annual runoff, suggesting a hydrological control on ΔLi-7 values. The study proposes that hydrological changes can affect river ΔLi-7 and calls for a reconsideration of its use in studying past weathering intensity and flux, offering a new approach to reconstruct hydrological conditions.

Reconstructing crustal thickness evolution from europium anomalies in detrital zircons

Ming Tang et al.

Summary: A new data compilation shows a positive correlation between zircon Eu/Eu* and crustal thickness in intermediate to felsic rocks, which has been used to infer crustal thickness. The calibration of a crustal thickness proxy based on Eu anomalies in zircons allows for the reconstruction of crustal thickness evolution in magmatic arcs and orogens. Analysis of detrital zircons from southern Tibet reveals two episodes of crustal thickening since the Cretaceous, temporally consistent with contractional deformation of sedimentary strata.

Paleozoic evolution of crustal thickness and elevation in the northern Appalachian orogen, USA

Ian W. Hillenbr et al.

Summary: The Acadian and Neoacadian orogenies in the New England Appalachian Mountains involved two phases of Paleozoic crustal thickening, leading to the formation of doubly thickened crust and an orogenic plateau. The Neoacadian crustal thickness shows a strong correlation with metamorphic grade, while geobarometry in southern New England underestimates crustal thickness and exhumation.

Raising the West: Mid-Cenozoic Colorado-plano related to subvolcanic batholith assembly in the Southern Rocky Mountains (USA)?

Peter W. Lipman

Summary: The Southern Rocky Mountains in Colorado, United States, have regional elevation and crustal thickness that may have been greater in the mid-Cenozoic era, potentially leading to higher elevations and evidence of rapid erosion during volcanism. This could be attributed to variable crustal thickening and uplift during composite batholith growth, overlaying prior thickening during early Cenozoic compression. Alternatively, the calibration of arc-crustal thickness may not be suitable for high-potassium continental arcs, casting doubt on similar interpretations using similar methods.

Provenance of upper Permian-Triassic sediments in the south of North China: Implications for the Qinling orogeny and basin evolution

Wentao Yang et al.

Summary: The Triassic Qinling Orogenic Belt was formed during the closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. Provenance analysis of sediments from the south of North China reveals the evolution of this basin-mountain system. Detrital zircons from different sedimentary rocks indicate a mixed provenance from the Qinling Orogenic Belt and Southern North China Block, showing the tectonic collision and uplift history in the region.
