Evolution of short-range order and its effects on the plastic deformation behavior of single crystals of the equiatomic Cr-Co-Ni medium-entropy alloy

Le Li et al.

Summary: Short-range ordering (SRO) in the equiatomic Cr-Co-Ni medium-entropy alloy (MEA) was studied using electrical resistivity measurements and mechanical tests. SRO was found to increase gradually with time during isothermal annealing and higher temperatures led to shorter saturation time but higher saturation resistivity. Plastic deformation behavior and stress-strain curves were not significantly affected by SRO, indicating SRO has little influence on mechanical properties.

Tensile and compressive plastic deformation behavior of medium-entropy Cr-Co-Ni single crystals from cryogenic to elevated temperatures

Le Li et al.

Summary: The equiatomic Cr-Co-Ni medium-entropy alloy with a FCC structure was studied for its various properties, including the measurement of critical resolved shear stress and the formation of deformation twinning. The CRSS value increases significantly with decreasing temperature and undergoes changes below 50 K. Additionally, the form and characteristics of deformation twinning at different temperatures were also investigated.

Can experiment determine the stacking fault energy of metastable alloys?

Xun Sun et al.

Summary: SFE is crucial for deformation mechanisms and mechanical properties of fcc metals and alloys. Negative SFE by DFT reflects thermodynamic instability of fcc phase, while experimentally determined SFEs are constrained by models. SFE obtained by DFT correlates well with primary deformation mechanisms in concentrated solid solutions.

Theory of twin strengthening in fcc high entropy alloys

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of twinning in fcc High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) and its impact on strength, proposing a twinning stress theory and validating it through experiments. The results indicate that twinning is controlled by twin nucleation in fcc alloys.

Stacking fault energy in concentrated alloys

Mulaine Shih et al.

Summary: This study revisits the meaning of stacking fault energy (SFE) and the assumptions of equilibrium dissociation of lattice dislocations in concentrated alloys, showing that SFE in pure metals is a unique value, but in alloys it has a distribution of values depending on the local atomic environment. By using atomistic simulations in a model NiCo alloy, researchers found that even the upper bound of SFE distribution alone cannot satisfy the force balance in some cases, indicating the key importance of the dislocation/solute interaction for the accurate assessment of SFE in alloys beyond dilute limit.
