Enhancing strength and ductility via crystalline-amorphous nanoarchitectures in TiZr-based alloys

Kaisheng Ming et al.

Summary: Crystalline-amorphous composites have the potential to achieve high strength and high ductility. Researchers fabricate a TiZr-based alloy with micrometer-size equiaxed grains that are made up of three-dimensional bicontinuous crystalline-amorphous nanoarchitectures. In situ tension and compression tests reveal enhanced ductility and strain hardening capability, providing ultra-high yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and large uniform ductility to the alloy. Experiments combined with simulations reveal the synergetic deformation mechanisms, resulting in an effective combination of strength, ductility, and strain hardening.

Dependence of Plastic Stability on 3D Interface Layer in Nanolaminated Materials

Shuimiao Jiang et al.

Summary: Nanolaminated materials often have poor plasticity due to shear instability, which can be improved by introducing CuNb 3D amorphous interface layers and Nb 3D crystalline interface layers. The plastic deformation of the crystalline interface layer is anisotropic, resulting in localized dislocation pileups and shear instability. On the other hand, the amorphous interface layer is plastically isotropic and can accommodate dislocations from arbitrary slip systems, alleviating stress concentrations and suppressing shear instability.

Hardening induced by dislocation core spreading at disordered interface in Cu/Nb multilayers

Wenfan Yang et al.

Summary: The study shows that introducing a disordered interface in Cu/Nb multilayers can significantly enhance their hardness by relaxing the Burgers vectors of dislocations. These findings are expected to provide new insights for the development of novel materials with ultrahigh hardness.
