Coupled segregation mechanisms of Sc, Zr and Mn at θ′ interfaces enhances the strength and thermal stability of Al-Cu alloys

Lu Jiang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the addition of trace amounts of Sc, Zr, and Mn in Al-Cu alloys refines and stabilizes theta' precipitates, resulting in increased hardness and improved thermal stability of the alloy. The enhanced properties are attributed to the unique segregation mechanisms of Mn, Sc, and Zr at the interfaces of the theta' precipitates.

Strong elemental interaction enhances the thermal stability of coherent precipitation strengthened Cu-Ni-Al alloys

Z. M. Li et al.

Summary: The coherent cuboidal precipitation of gamma' phases can significantly enhance the high temperature properties of Cu-Ni-Al alloys. Introducing Si with strong elemental interaction can promote the precipitation of gamma' phases and suppress discontinuous precipitation, leading to improved stability of the matrix. The addition of Si decreases Gibbs free energy of gamma' phase and enhances cohesive energy, making the alloys more stable and homogeneous, thus optimizing the high temperature properties of Cu-Ni-Al-Si alloy.
