Seasonal and spatial variability of Atlanto-Iberian pelagic fish diet with estimates of intraguild predation

P. Fonseca et al.

Summary: This study investigated the diets of three abundant coastal pelagic fish species in the eastern Atlantic and estimated the impact of cannibalism and intraguild predation on egg mortality. The study found that there was diet overlap between the three species, but their diets varied. Sardine was found to have the greatest impact on fish egg mortality.

Improved methodology for microplastic extraction from gastrointestinal tracts of fat fish species

Clara Lopes et al.

Summary: The addition of Tween-20 in the potassium hydroxide (KOH) digestion protocol for separating microplastics from biological samples has been found to increase the flow rate during filtration, enhance the recovery rates of LDPE, PC, and PET, and protect against degradation of PC and PET. This study suggests that adding Tween-20 to the KOH digestion protocol is a simple and economical way to optimize microplastics extraction.

Understanding plastic degradation and microplastic formation in the environment: A review

Kai Zhang et al.

Summary: Plastic waste pollution is a global issue that poses a potential threat to ecosystems and human health, but knowledge on plastic environmental degradation and microplastic formation is still limited. Future research should further study the key factors influencing plastic degradation to predict the fate of plastics in different environments.

Microplastics in Tissues (Brain, Gill, Muscle and Gastrointestinal) of Mullus barbatus and Alosa immaculata

Muhammed Atamanalp et al.

Summary: The study investigated the presence and characteristics of microplastics in different tissues of commercial fish from the Black Sea. It was found that microplastic abundance was high in all tissues regardless of fish species, with the gastrointestinal tract showing the highest contamination levels. The study recommended two fish species, red mullet and pontic shad, as suitable for monitoring microplastics in the study area.
