Protective and sex-specific effects of moderate dose folic acid supplementation on the placenta following assisted reproduction in mice

Rita Gloria Ihirwe et al.

Summary: Epigenetic defects induced by ART can lead to abnormal placental phenotypes observed at term. We hypothesize that ART disrupts DNA methylation and gene expression during early placenta development. We suggest that FA supplementation can rescue ART-induced placental defects. Female mice were given different doses of FA, and ART resulted in differentially expressed genes and DNA methylation changes in placentas. Moderate dose FA supplementation partially corrected the alterations in gene expression, while high dose FA supplementation showed adverse effects. ART-associated placental DNA methylation and transcriptome alterations are sex-specific and can be partially corrected by maternal FA supplementation.

Density functional theory (DFT) investigation of the oxidative degradation of NaAsO2 via hydroxyl radical

Ashlyn M. Koval et al.

Summary: Arsenic is a widespread environmental hazard, and understanding the environmental fate of arsenic-containing compounds is crucial for remediation. By using computational methods, we found that sodium arsenite undergoes sequential addition reactions to convert to less-toxic sodium arsenate in water solution.

Particulate arsenic trioxide induces higher DNA damage and reactive oxygen species than soluble arsenite in lung epithelial cells

Karen L. Cooper et al.

Summary: Environmental exposure to arsenic, whether through ingestion or inhalation, is associated with lung cancer. This study focused on the relatively under-investigated inhalation route of particulate arsenic exposure, specifically the lung carcinogenic mechanisms. The research demonstrated that particulate arsenic trioxide exposure in lung epithelial cells leads to significantly higher oxidative DNA damage, strand break, and superoxide generation compared to soluble arsenite exposure. These findings suggest that inhalation of particulate arsenic plays an important role in lung carcinogenesis.

Vitamin B12 and folate decrease inflammation and fibrosis in NASH by preventing syntaxin 17 homocysteinylation

Madhulika Tripathi et al.

Summary: The study reveals that hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) plays a key role in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) through homocysteinylation of proteins, leading to autophagy blockage. Vitamin B-12 and folate may serve as a novel first-line therapy for NASH by reducing homocysteine levels and promoting autophagy, thus improving liver histology.

N6-Methyladenosine Reader Protein YT521-B Homology Domain-Containing 2 Suppresses Liver Steatosis by Regulation of mRNA Stability of Lipogenic Genes

Bing Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that m(6)A enrichment and mRNA expression of lipogenic genes were increased in leptin-receptor-deficient mice. The m(6)A reader, Ythdc2, was down-regulated in obese mice and NAFLD patients, and its suppression in lean mice led to TG accumulation while overexpression in obese mice improved liver steatosis and insulin resistance. This suggests that Ythdc2 plays a crucial role in regulating hepatic lipogenesis and TG homeostasis, presenting a potential target for treating obesity-related NAFLD.

Arsenic exposure from groundwater: environmental contamination, human health effects, and sustainable solutions

Elida Cristina Monteiro De Oliveira et al.

Summary: Arsenic is naturally occurring but can also contaminate groundwater due to mining, agricultural, and industrial processes. Human exposure to arsenic from contaminated water can lead to acute toxicity and chronic effects, including skin lesions and cancer. Strategies to diminish arsenic in water include physicochemical treatment systems, bioremediation using cyanobacteria and algae, and nanotechnology applications.
