Identification of Eggs and Spawning Zones of Hairtail Fishes Trichiurus (Pisces: Trichiuridae) in Northern South China Sea, Using DNA Barcoding

Gang Hou et al.

Summary: This study identified three species of Trichiurus using DNA barcodes in ichthyoplankton surveys conducted in the northern South China Sea in spring and late summer-autumn of 2019. The spawning grounds of T. japonicus and T. nanhaiensis were found to mainly occur from the central and southern Beibu Gulf to the waters off the Pearl River Estuary, with higher egg densities in spring than in late summer-autumn. The distribution of Trichiurus eggs was associated with specific water masses, with eggs occurring in different water masses depending on the season.

Carbon and nitrogen isotopic compositions of particulate organic matter in the upwelling zone off the east coast of Hainan Island, China

Xuan Lu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that during summer, suspended particulate organic matter (POM) off the east coast of Hainan Island in the South China Sea is influenced by coastal upwelling, coastal current, and freshwater discharge. Stable isotope analysis can reflect the sources of POM and their cycling in the marine ecosystem.

Distribution and Sources of Particulate Organic Matter in the Northern South China Sea: Implications of Human Activity

Huang Chao et al.

Summary: The study found that the suspended particulate organic matter in the northern South China Sea is mainly influenced by marine organic matter, terrestrial inputs, and freshwater algae, with nearshore stations being primarily sourced from eutrophic areas, microbial activities, and heterotrophic modifications. The distribution patterns of delta C-13 and delta N-15 suggest a complex interplay of factors, including human activities along the coast.
