Exposure to polystyrene nanoplastics induces an anxiolytic-like effect, changes in antipredator defensive response, and DNA damage in Swiss mice

Abraao Tiago Batista Guimaraes et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of exposure to poly-styrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) on the behavior, brain antioxidant activity, and DNA damage in male Swiss mice. It was found that mice exposed to PS NPs exhibited anxiolytic-like behavior and altered defensive response when confronted with a predator. Additionally, the exposure to PS NPs led to reduced brain antioxidant activity and increased DNA damage. These findings highlight the potential impact of PS NPs on mammals and underscore the ecotoxicological risks associated with their dispersion in natural environments.

Disturbing ion regulation and excretion in medaka (Oryzias melastigma) gills by microplastics: Insights from the gut-gill axis

Siwen Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different sizes of polystyrene microplastics on ion regulation and ammonia excretion in medaka fish. The results showed that polystyrene microplastics had no significant impact on Na+ and K+ regulation, but significantly impaired Cl- regulation and ammonia excretion. The size-dependent effects were observed, with disturbances in Cl- regulation in both the 4 μm and 20 μm treated groups, and disturbances in ammonia excretion only in the 20 μm treated group.

Glyphosate and glufosinate ammonium, herbicides commonly used on genetically modified crops, and their interaction with microplastics: Ecotoxicity in anuran tadpoles

Rafael C. Lajmanovich et al.

Summary: The study found that glyphosate (GLY) and glufosinate ammonium (GA) herbicides, when used alone or in combination with polyethylene microplastic particles (PEMPs), have an impact on the toxicity of Scinax squalirostris tadpoles, with the combination increasing toxicity effects. Exposure to GLY and GA herbicides alone, as well as in combination with PEMPs, affects enzyme activities and leads to an increase in GST, and a decrease in AChE and CbE.

Sorption of SARS-CoV-2 Virus Particles to the Surface of Microplastics Released during Washing Processes

Noemi Belisova et al.

Summary: The research investigates washing processes as potential sources of microplastics, specifically microfibers in wastewater, and explores the behavior of SARS-CoV-2 virus particles in wastewater after the washing process, particularly their ability to adsorb onto the surface of released microfibers. The study concludes that the virus can attach to solid impurities such as textile fibers (microfibers) found in sewage, and that the wash water can influence their presence in wastewater. The highest efficiency (over 99%) of virus particle removal was observed after the washing process using liquid washing powder and washing soda. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the behavior of virus particles in wastewater.

Toxicological impact of SARS-CoV-2 on the health of the neotropical fish, Poecilia reticulata

Guilherme Malafaia et al.

Summary: The current COVID-19 pandemic has had significant impacts on society, including high health and economic costs. However, the potential ecological risks of the virus in freshwater systems are not well known. This study evaluated the exposure of Poecilia reticulata juveniles to two peptides derived from the Spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. The results showed that the peptides induced anxiety-like behavior and increased acetylcholinesterase activity in the fish. The peptides also caused alterations in growth/development patterns, as well as redox imbalance, suggesting a health risk to fish and other aquatic organisms.

Summary: This study conducted a field trial on the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater facilities in Beijing after the end of the COVID-19 epidemics. The results showed that the wastewater treatment facility is a large repository for SARS-CoV-2. The viral RNA was still present in hospital sewage for 15 days and in municipal wastewater treatment plants for more than 19 days. The study highlights the persistence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater, especially at lower temperatures.

Nutritional-status dependent effects of microplastics on activity and expression of alkaline phosphatase and alpha-amylase in Brachionus rotundiformis

Jia-Lang Zheng et al.

Summary: Tissue-nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (ALPL) and alpha-amylase (AMY) play essential roles in the immune and digestive systems, respectively. This study demonstrated for the first time the nutritional status-dependent impact of microplastics (MPs) on immune and digestive responses in zooplankton, providing sensitive molecular biomarkers for assessing MPs toxicity using this species as model animals. The gene expression of the tested genes was significantly responsive to MPs, especially in the feeding rotifers, depending on MPs concentrations and nutritional statuses.

Summary: The interaction between microplastics (MPs) and SARS-CoV-2 was investigated using molecular dynamic simulations. The results showed that there was a strong affinity between MPs and the SARS-CoV-2 RNA fragment, regardless of the environmental conditions. The interaction involved electrostatic and hydrophobic processes, and the strength of the interaction was associated with the structural parameters of the MPs. This study highlights the importance of understanding the impact of MPs on the transmission of SARS-CoV-2, as humans are exposed to MPs through their lungs.
