Recycling of acetate and ammonium from digestate for single cell protein production by a hybrid electrochemical-membrane fermentation process

Danfei Zeng et al.

Summary: A hybrid electrochemical-membrane fermentation process was developed to recover nutrients from synthetic digestate and produce yeast SCP. Nutrients were recovered and concentrated using electrodialysis and forward osmosis, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae achieved similar SCP productions from recovered and concentrated nutrients.

Ammonia recovery from brines originating from a municipal wastewater ion exchange process and valorization of recovered nitrogen into microbial protein

Samuela Guida et al.

Summary: This study compared a hollow fibre membrane contactor and two vacuum thermal stripping processes for recovering ammonia from ion exchange regeneration brines. The hollow fibre membrane contactor showed the highest ammonia recovery rate and produced high-quality ammonium sulfate. Additionally, the recovered ammonia solution can be used as a substrate for microbial protein production.

Green electricity-driven simultaneous ammonia recovery and in-situ upcycling for microbial protein production

Xiaoyong Yang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the successful simultaneous recovery of ammonium from wastewater and in-situ utilization for the production of green microbial protein (MP) using a microbial electrochemical recovery conversion cell (MERC). The MERC system can generate high-quality dried biomass from wastewater, which has the potential to substitute traditional plant/animal-based protein.

Towards new carbon-neutral food systems: Combining carbon capture and utilization with microbial protein production

L. Van Peteghem et al.

Summary: Alternative protein sources, such as microbial protein (MP), are being considered to reduce the environmental impact of food production. This study proposes the use of Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) to drive heterotrophic MP production. By comparing different MP production routes and their metabolic pathways, the potential of this concept as a carbon-neutral food or feed production process is evaluated. Acetate and ethanol are found to be the most beneficial substrates for the integrated CCU-to-MP process.

Minmin Pan et al.

Summary: The study utilized a novel three-chamber microalgal bio-electrochemical system for simultaneous clean cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris and treatment of industrial organic wastewater. Results showed that increasing electric current improved removal rates of COD, total nitrogen, and phosphorus. Nutrient migration in the middle chamber supported the growth of Chlorella vulgaris by recovering nutrients from wastewater.
