Straw return counteracts the negative effects of warming on microbial community and soil multifunctionality

Gong Wu et al.

Summary: Climate warming is a serious threat to soil biodiversity and ecosystem stability. Straw return is recommended as an environmentally friendly management practice to improve soil health and agricultural productivity. However, the interactive effects of climate warming and straw return on microbial communities and soil functioning are not well understood. In this study, soil warming decreased fungal diversity and functional genes associated with nutrient cycling, while straw return increased bacterial diversity and microbial functional gene abundances, ultimately enhancing soil multifunctionality. The findings highlight the importance of soil biodiversity in maintaining agroecosystem functioning, especially under climate warming.

Organic amendments increase crop yield while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from the perspective of carbon fees in a soybean-wheat system

Xin Zhang et al.

Summary: The long-term use of straw and manure amendments led to increases in soybean and wheat yield, as well as N2O emissions. Soil properties tested explained 76% of the variations observed in N2O emissions, with soil nitrification capacity, pH, and denitrification capacity directly affecting the emissions. Despite increasing total GHG emissions, organic amendments had little effect on greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) and increased net ecosystem economic budget (NEEB), indicating that the benefits from increased crop yield may offset the carbon fees caused by higher GHG emissions. Organic amendment could be an effective strategy for improving crop yield while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate Overrides Effects of Fertilizer and Straw Management as Controls of Nitrous Oxide Emissions After Oilseed Rape Harvest

Sarah Koebke et al.

Summary: This study investigated the regulating factors of nitrogen cycling and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions during the post-harvest period of oilseed rape cultivation. The findings showed that straw incorporation is environmentally beneficial for mitigating N2O losses, and nitrogen fertilizer has no effect on post-harvest N2O emissions. Climate factors, such as soil water-filled pore space and temperature, were identified as key factors controlling N2O emissions.

Contrasting effects of straw and biochar on microscale heterogeneity of soil O2 and pH: Implication for N2O emissions

Kun Zhu et al.

Summary: This study used planar optodes to continuously measure the microscale dynamics of O2 and pH in soil amended with straw and biochar. The results showed that the recalcitrant biochar could increase soil pH and maintain an oxic zone, whereas the addition of straw resulted in a decline in soil pH. The biochar treatment also reduced N2O emissions due to the high pH and oxic conditions, while straw induced microoxic conditions and enhanced N2O emissions. These findings provide insights into the microscale factors influencing N transformations and have implications for environmental monitoring.

Summary: In maize production in China, incorporating maize residues into soil can reduce chemical nitrogen fertilization, increase maize yield and soil fertility, and mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. However, excessive nitrogen fertilization can increase greenhouse gas emissions and decrease nitrogen use efficiency.

Return of crop residues to arable land stimulates N2O emission but mitigates NO3- leaching: a meta-analysis

Zhijie Li et al.

Summary: Incorporating crop residues into the soil is effective in sustaining soil fertility and improving soil carbon sequestration, but it can lead to increased N2O emissions and NO3- leaching. The impact of crop residue return on soil N2O emissions and NO3- leaching varies depending on soil and environmental conditions.

Crop straw incorporation mediates the impacts of soil aggregate size on greenhouse gas emissions

Mengdie Jiang et al.

Summary: This study revealed that the addition of straw significantly increased CO2 and N2O emissions in soil aggregates, with the <0.25 mm fraction showing a significantly lower CO2 emission compared to the larger fractions. The 1-2 mm fraction had the highest N2O emissions across both straw-unamended and straw-amended treatments.

Shijie Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term straw retention and nitrogen addition significantly impact the nitrate partitioning in paddy field soils, primarily by increasing the activities of denitrification, anaerobic ammonium oxidation, and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium, as well as the abundance of associated genes.

Elevated CO2 negates O3 impacts on terrestrial carbon and nitrogen cycles

Longlong Xia et al.

Summary: Increasing tropospheric concentrations of ozone and carbon dioxide have significant impacts on global ecosystem functions and services. Ozone decreases productivity and food production, while carbon dioxide stimulates carbon and nitrogen storage in ecosystems. Simultaneous increases in both gases can offset the negative effects of ozone, highlighting the need for evaluating terrestrial carbon and nitrogen feedbacks.
