Risk Assessment and Source Identification of Arsenic in Surface Sediments from Caohai Lake, China

Ying Tang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the spatial distribution, ecological risk, and origin of arsenic in surface sediments from a hypertrophic urban lake in China. The results showed that arsenic concentration decreased from north to south, consistent with the eutrophication status of the lake. The contamination of arsenic was primarily influenced by anthropogenic factors, and although the current risk was low, there was a potential for moderate to high ecological risk.

Contamination and eco-risk assessment of toxic trace elements in lakebed surface sediments of Lake Yangzong, southwestern China

Yang Zhang et al.

Summary: Toxic trace elements pose an ongoing environmental problem in Lake Yangzong, with severe contamination of arsenic (As) in the southwestern part of the lake. Other toxic trace elements, such as cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb), are slightly to moderately enriched and decrease from the northwest to the southeast areas. The contamination is dominated by As and Pb, with the northern section and southwestern bay showing higher levels. Arsenic and Cd pose a high ecological risk, while Cu and Pb pose a low risk to biota. Statistical analyses suggest that metal contaminants originate from smelting of metal ores, leakage of tailings effluent, and coal consumption.

Late Quaternary aggradation of the Datong Basin in northern China revealed by OSL dating of core sediments and implications for groundwater arsenic pollution

Yantian Xu et al.

Summary: In the study, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was used to investigate sediment ages in the Datong Basin, revealing a sedimentary hiatus from about 19-3.6 ka due to enhanced East Asian summer monsoon and improved vegetation. Sedimentation rates were found to be high below the hiatus and resumed after 3.6 ka possibly as a result of weakened monsoon and increased human activities. Climate change was identified as the main driving force behind the aggradational history recorded in core SY1 since at least 74 ka, with high-arsenic groundwater potentially sourced from sediments deposited within incised valleys or paleolake-related sediments.

Bioaccumulation and biotransformation of inorganic arsenic in zhikong scallop (Chlamys farreri) after waterborne exposure

Yanfang Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the bioaccumulation, biotransformation, and subcellular partitioning of inorganic arsenic in different tissues of scallops. Results showed that different inorganic arsenic species had different effects on the bioaccumulation and biotransformation in bivalves.

Controls on the Spatial Distribution of Trace Metal Concentrations along the Bedrock-Dominated South Fork New River, North Carolina

Jerry R. Miller et al.

Summary: In contrast to alluvial rivers, this study focused on the distribution of toxic trace metals along bedrock rivers, specifically the South Fork New River. The concentrations of trace metals such as Cu, Cr, and Zn were found to be closely linked to zones of high Fe and Mn concentrations in the pool and shallow bedrock reaches of the river.

Adsorptive and photocatalytic properties of metal oxides towards arsenic remediation from water: A review

Arijit Dutta Gupta et al.

Summary: The presence of arsenic in water is a widespread issue worldwide due to its toxicity and carcinogenic nature. Metal oxides with specific affinities and high surface areas have shown promise as effective adsorbents and photocatalysts for arsenic removal. Various mechanisms including surface migration, deprotonation, oxidation, redox reactions, ligand exchange, and charge complexations are involved in the process of arsenic removal with metal oxides as heterostructures. The review critically analyzes the synthesis, application, and mechanisms of arsenic removal, while also exploring future scopes and challenges for achieving arsenic-free water solutions.
