Biotechnological methods to remove microplastics: a review

Uttpal Anand et al.

Summary: Microplastics pollution poses a significant threat to ecosystems and affects both abiotic and biotic components. Microplastics are complex contaminants that can transport other contaminants and microbes. Various methods, including biodegradation, incineration, landfilling, and recycling, are currently used to remove microplastics. This review focuses on the sources, toxicity, and biodegradation of microplastics, as well as discussing the role of algae, fungi, and bacteria in biodegradation and presenting biotechnological methods to enhance degradation, such as gene editing tools and bioinformatics.

Living membrane bioreactor for highly effective and eco-friendly treatment of textile wastewater

Sameh Jallouli et al.

Summary: In this study, the treatability of synthetic textile wastewater containing model dyes using an innovative living membrane bioreactor (LMBR) with encapsulated self-forming dynamic membrane (ESFDM) was investigated. The results showed that ESFDMBR effectively reduced the concentrations of COD, DOC and dyes in the wastewater with high removal efficiencies. This treatment method is cost-effective, simple to implement and has great potential for textile wastewater treatment.

Algae and bacteria consortia for wastewater decontamination and transformation into biodiesel, bioethanol, biohydrogen, biofertilizers and animal feed: a review

Uttpal Anand et al.

Summary: Traditional wastewater treatment has focused on removing contaminants for sanitation purposes, but the issues of climate change and depletion of natural resources require methods that also convert waste into chemicals and fuels. The synergistic coupling of microalgae and bacteria in biological treatments shows promise in removing various contaminants and generating biofuels. This review examines the use of algae and bacteria in wastewater treatment and valorization, with emphasis on cell-to-cell adhesion, wastewater properties, and techniques for algae harvesting and production of various valuable products such as biodiesel, bioethanol, biohydrogen, exopolysaccarides, biofertilizers, and animal feeds.

Diversity of archaea and niche preferences among putative ammonia-oxidizing Nitrososphaeria dominating across European arable soils

Aurelien Saghai et al.

Summary: The dominant Archaeal communities in arable soils are Nitrososphaeria, which includes all known ammonia-oxidizing archaea. This study used phylogenetic information and machine learning to identify the drivers of Nitrososphaeria along a large European gradient, with key predictors being mean annual temperature, C:N ratio, and pH. Specializations to soil pH were found in the Nitrososphaeria phylogeny, highlighting the importance of fine phylogenetic scale in studying their ecology.

Innovative encapsulated self-forming dynamic bio-membrane bioreactor (ESFDMBR) for efficient wastewater treatment and fouling control

Fabiano Castrogiovanni et al.

Summary: A novel concept of a self-forming dynamic bio-membrane for innovative wastewater treatment in a membrane bioreactor is presented in this study. The ESFDM bioreactor showed comparable COD concentration reductions to a conventional MBR but achieved higher reductions in nitrogen-containing nutrients and lower fouling rates. The microbial community structure in the ESFDM promoted bacterial growth and exhibited higher total cell count and diversity compared to the mixed liquor.

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea and complete ammonia-oxidizing Nitrospira in water treatment systems

Sarah Al-Ajeel et al.

Summary: Nitrification, the process of converting ammonia to nitrate, plays a significant role in engineered water treatment systems. Different microbial guilds participate in this process, however, their relative contributions to nitrogen cycling are still not well understood. Understanding the active nitrifiers is crucial for optimizing engineered systems that rely on nitrifiers for ammonia removal.
