Climate and land-use driven reorganisation of structure and function in river macroinvertebrate communities

Theophile L. Mouton et al.

Summary: Understanding temporal changes in species community composition is crucial for conservation management. This study assessed the patterns and drivers of taxonomic and functional temporal diversity in river macroinvertebrate communities over 26 years in New Zealand. Climate and land-use changes were found to drive differences in community composition, with species shifting their ranges towards higher latitudes. Functional traits were related to population trends and latitudinal range shifts, with species with more reproductive cycles and longer adult lifespans increasing their population size and larger species with more descendants per reproductive cycle shifting their range towards more southern latitudes.

Thermal traits of freshwater macroinvertebrates vary with feeding group and phylogeny

Nathan J. Tomczyk et al.

Summary: Research found that shredders generally have lower temperature preferences, optima, and maxima, while other FFGs had higher thermal trait values. FFG explained 40% of the variation in critical thermal maximum, while Phylogeny explained 26%-88% of the variation in thermal and feeding traits. Phylogeny and FFG are both important predictors of thermal traits in aquatic macroinvertebrates.

Recent trends in stream macroinvertebrates: warm-adapted and pesticide-tolerant taxa increase in richness

Friederike Gebert et al.

Summary: Recent studies have reported both decreases and increases in insect richness. In this study, nationwide monitoring data from Switzerland was analyzed to understand trends and underlying mechanisms. The results showed that the richness of aquatic insects remained stable or increased, with warm-adapted and pesticide-tolerant taxa showing increasing patterns. Climate and land-use factors were identified as important explanatory variables.

Continuous riverine biodiversity changes in a 10-years-post-restoration-study-Impacts and pitfalls

Armin W. Lorenz

Summary: The study found that after river restoration, the richness and abundance of benthic invertebrate species gradually increase over the following 6 years, although some factors can lead to a decrease in species richness in the second year after restoration. During the restoration process, significant impact of a large flood event was observed, and the importance of tree cover and riparian vegetation on changes was highlighted.

Rock glaciers and related cold rocky landforms: Overlooked climate refugia for mountain biodiversity

Stefano Brighenti et al.

Summary: Cold rocky landforms in mountain ranges, often overlooked in ecological literature, have the potential to provide stable and cool habitats for biodiversity in the face of climate warming. These features may act as key climate refugia for terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity, remaining on the landscape even after adjacent glaciers and snowfields have melted.

The geography of metapopulation synchrony in dendritic river networks

Stefano Larsen et al.

Summary: The study found that in dendritic habitats, such as river ecosystems, network topology and branching complexity can buffer fish metapopulations against synchronous dynamics, promoting the persistence of species. Synchrony was higher between populations connected by direct water flow and decayed faster with distance over the Euclidean dimension, indicating that network topology and flow directionality play a key role in shaping spatial patterns of synchrony in fish metapopulations.

Recovery from air pollution and subsequent acidification masks the effects of climate change on a freshwater macroinvertebrate community

Summary: The study found that the impacts of stressors such as climate change on freshwater macroinvertebrate communities are complex and varied, leading to significant changes in community structure. Analyzing the data requires consideration of historical context and the combined effects of multiple factors.
