Effect of sorption properties on the content, ecotoxicity, and bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in bottom sediments

Kamil Skic et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) tend to accumulate in sediment due to their hydrophobic nature. This study aimed to assess the relationship between sorption properties and PAH content in sediment and mussels. The study found that factors such as steric effects and pore size influenced PAH sorption processes. In addition, higher organic matter content reduced the bioavailability of PAHs and caused more severe effects on organisms.

Sewage discharge and organic matter affect the partitioning behaviors of different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in a river surface sediment-pore water system

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: The partitioning behaviors of PPAHs, NPAHs, and OPAHs in the surface sediment-pore water system of the Haihe River were studied. The lgKOC of PPAHs was significantly greater than that of NPAHs and OPAHs. Sewage discharge and organic matter had appreciable impacts on the partitioning processes of different PAHs.

Hydrologic Control on Arsenic Cycling at the Groundwater-Surface Water Interface of a Tidal Channel

Xuan Yu et al.

Summary: Historical industrial activities have caused soil contamination at coastlines worldwide, which are susceptible to disruptions by climate change and rising sea levels. However, the effects of hydrologic dynamics on contaminant transportation in tidal environments have not been extensively studied. This research collected data from various sensors at a contaminated site near a freshwater tidal channel and found that seasonal groundwater interactions and sub-daily water level fluctuations in the channel contribute to varying redox conditions and contaminant concentrations. The findings highlight the importance of understanding the impacts of sea-level rise on the mobility of coastal solutes.

Current and Future Trends of Low and High Molecular Weight Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Surface Water and Sediments of China: Insights from Their Long-Term Relationships between Concentrations and Emissions

Weiwei Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the temporal trend of PAHs in China over the past 20 years and found a positive correlation between the concentrations of low and high molecular weight PAHs and their total emissions. By assessing future scenarios, the study showed that technological improvement and control of biomass burning can effectively reduce PAH emissions.

Simultaneously enhanced removal of PAHs and nitrogen driven by Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle in constructed wetland through automatic tidal operation

Jiaxing Lu et al.

Summary: By improving the oxygen environment and substrate, automatic tidal flow constructed wetland microcosms were constructed for simultaneous removal of nitrogen and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification, as well as microbial degradation, were found to be the major processes for nitrogen and PAHs removal. The addition of magnetite enhanced the number of PAHs-degrading bacteria and metabolic pathways, promoting the anaerobic degradation of PAHs.

Land-Ocean Exchange Mechanism of Chlorinated Paraffins and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons with Diverse Sources in a Coastal Zone Boundary Area, North China: The Role of Regional Atmospheric Transmission

Lu Jiang et al.

Summary: The marine environment is an important sink for many land-origin pollutants, and coastal and offshore areas are used to study the transfer process and exchange mechanism of organic compounds. A year-long study in a coastal area of North China found high concentrations of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air samples. Different gas-particle partitioning models suggest that the steady-state hypothesis provides a better explanation for land-ocean exchange. The source-sink influences of CPs and PAHs are affected by atmospheric motion, alternating between gaseous diffusion and particulate sedimentation in different seasons. Source apportionment results show different transfer characteristics contribute to the source divergence of CPs and PAHs within a 12 nautical mile radius in the same area.

Optimizing the fugacity model to select appropriate remediation pathways for perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in a lake

Yunqiao Zhou et al.

Summary: Increased anthropogenic activities have caused contamination of PFASs in lakes worldwide. This study conducted research in Baiyangdian Lake, China, and found that the average concentrations of PFASs have increased significantly. The water phase is the primary transport path for PFASs, and the exchange flux between water and sediment is high.

Remediation of contaminated dredged harbor sediments by combining hydrodynamic cavitation, hydrocyclone, and persulfate oxidation process

Chang-Mao Hung et al.

Summary: In this study, a pilot-scale hybrid treatment system consisting of HC, HS, and PS was used to remove PAHs from dredged harbor sediments. The study found that under certain conditions, the combined HC-PS-HS system can effectively remove PAHs, especially lower-ring PAHs. Additionally, the decline in organic matter content during the combined treatment process was found to lead to the gradual degradation and transformation of aromatic protein-based components into soluble microbial metabolites.

Riverine transport and water-sediment exchange of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) along the middle-lower Yangtze River, China

Zhonghua Zhao et al.

Summary: The study revealed that sediments in the Yangtze River act as a secondary emission source and sink for PAHs, contributing to higher risks downstream. Elevated PAH levels in developed areas were linked to economic factors, primarily from coal and vehicle emissions. Water runoff was identified as the main transport pathway for PAHs in the middle-lower Yangtze River, while dam impoundment upstream led to decreased sediment discharge and increased retention effect.

Dissolved polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the Northwestern Pacific to the Southern Ocean: Surface seawater distribution, source apportionment, and air-seawater exchange

Xue Zhang et al.

Summary: PAH concentrations in seawater vary in different ocean regions, with three-ringed PAHs dominating the composition. Levels of PAHs in the Pacific and Indian Oceans show a strong correlation with salinity and distance to the coastline. Air-seawater fugacity ratios indicate net fluxes of PAHs from seawater to air in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, while the Southern Ocean shows a net flow of PAHs from air to seawater. Source apportionment analysis suggests that petrogenic sources and coal/wood combustion have the largest contributions to total PAHs. Higher contributions from petrogenic sources are found at sites near coastal regions.

Effect of simulated tidal cycle on DOM, nitrogen and phosphorus release from sediment in Dagu River-Jiaozhou Bay estuary

Xinjuan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of tidal cycle intensity on sediment dissolved organic matter (DOM), nitrogen and phosphorus release. The results showed that higher tidal cycle intensity led to stronger DOM mineralization and diffusion, as well as increased release of NH4+-N and NO3--N. Tidal disturbance also greatly changed microbial richness and diversity, with certain bacteria having important roles in nutrient transformation.
