Atmospheric particle-bound mercury in the northern Indo-Gangetic Plain region: Insights into sources from mercury isotope analysis and influencing factors

Junming Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the levels, seasonality, sources, and influencing factors of particulate-bound mercury (PBM) in the atmosphere of Lumbini, Nepal. The results show that the PBM concentration exceeds the reported ranges for remote and rural sites worldwide and is mainly influenced by anthropogenic sources during the dry season and post-monsoon period.

Dissociation of Mercuric Oxides Drives Anomalous Isotope Fractionation during Net Photo-oxidation of Mercury Vapor in Air

Guangyi Sun et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of mass-independent fractionation of even-mass mercury isotopes in the atmosphere suggests that UVC-induced photodissociation of mercuric oxides may be responsible for this phenomenon. This finding has significant implications for understanding mercury biogeochemistry.

Stable Isotopes Reveal Photoreduction of Particle-Bound Mercury Driven by Water-Soluble Organic Carbon during Severe Haze

Ke Zhang et al.

Summary: Haze with high particle loading can lead to enrichment of particle-bound Hg (PBM), which may impact the transformation and transport of atmospheric Hg. This study reveals that photoreduction of PBM during haze episodes can result in a significant release of Hg back to the atmosphere. This process may require revision of atmospheric Hg budgeting and modeling.

Potential factors impacting PM2.5-Hg during haze evolution revealed by mercury isotope: Emission sources and photochemical processes

Yue Qiu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of emission sources and photochemical pathways on fine-particle bound mercury during haze events. The results show that different source regions contribute to the variations of fine-particle bound mercury. Biomass burning is a significant source of mercury during winter haze in northern China. Gucheng, an inland site in China, is impacted by marine aerosols during haze evolution. Photoreduction plays a significant role in the transformation of fine-particle bound mercury during haze events.

Mercury isotope evidence for Arctic summertime re-emission of mercury from the cryosphere

Beatriz Ferreira Araujo et al.

Summary: During Arctic springtime, atmospheric elemental mercury is oxidized and deposited to the cryosphere by halogen radicals. This is followed by a summertime peak in atmospheric mercury, which is primarily attributed to terrestrial mercury inputs to the Arctic Ocean. The isotope signatures of mercury in the Arctic atmosphere, marine environment, and terrestrial sources reflect the re-emission of mercury deposited during spring. The study suggests that terrestrial mercury inputs remain in the marine ecosystem without substantial loss to the global atmosphere, but may have effects on food webs. The thawing of permafrost due to Arctic warming leads to increased transport of soil mercury to the Arctic Ocean, where it is buried in marine sediment rather than emitted to the global atmosphere.

Jiayan Shi et al.

Summary: Long-term monitoring of atmospheric mercury in Xiamen, Southeast China from 2012 to 2020 revealed significant temporal variations in mercury concentrations. Factors such as meteorological conditions, mercury emissions, and transportation were found to be important drivers of mercury concentration changes, with anthropogenic emissions showing a decreasing trend over time, indicating the effectiveness of emission reduction measures.

Sources and processes of iron aerosols in a megacity in Eastern China

Yanhong Zhu et al.

Summary: Iron in aerosol particles plays an important role in marine ecosystems as a source of micronutrients, but it also poses potential threats to human health. A study conducted in Hangzhou, China, used receptor modeling to determine the sources of dissolved iron and total iron in different weather conditions. The results showed that industrial emissions were the main contributors to dissolved iron and total iron on haze, fog, dust, and clear days. The solubility of iron was highest on fog days and lowest on rain days.

Isotope investigation of mercury sources in a creek impacted by multiple anthropogenic activities

Saebom Jung et al.

Summary: The study revealed diverse mercury sources at Gumu Creek, including commercial liquid mercury, phenyl-mercury, and fly ash, consistent with the types of waste deposited within the hazardous waste landfill (HWL). The results suggest that mercury isotope ratios can effectively identify potential mercury sources in heterogeneous environments with multiple anthropogenic activities.

Mass-Independent Fractionation of Mercury Isotopes during Photoreduction of Soot Particle Bound Hg(II)

Qiang Huang et al.

Summary: Soot and mercury are both significant air pollutants, and this study found that the presence of soot during the photoreduction of Hg(II) can lead to Hg isotope fractionation. The different conditions result in varying reactions, with mass-independent Hg isotope fractionation observed under different conditions. This research sheds light on the transformational histories of aerosol-bound Hg(II) in the environment.

Mercury stable isotopes constrain atmospheric sources to the ocean

Martin Jiskra et al.

Summary: Mercury exposure through consumption of seafood is a significant pathway for human exposure. Earth system models suggest that mercury in marine ecosystems mainly comes from atmospheric wet and dry deposition of Hg(II), with a smaller contribution from gaseous Hg(0) uptake. Studies on marine Hg deposition and gas exchange are limited, but stable isotope measurements in Atlantic and Mediterranean seawater indicate a significant contribution of atmospheric Hg and gaseous elemental mercury uptake to ocean mercury levels.

Improved Mechanistic Model of the Atmospheric Redox Chemistry of Mercury

Viral Shah et al.

Summary: A new chemical mechanism for the atmospheric cycling of Hg-0/Hg-I/Hg-II is proposed and implemented in a global atmospheric chemistry model for comparison with observations. The model successfully explains the oxidation and deposition processes of Hg in the atmosphere, with major uncertainties including the concentration of Br, stability and reactions of Hg-I, and speciation and photoreduction of Hg-II in aerosols and clouds.

Stable Mercury Isotopes Revealing Photochemical Processes in the Marine Boundary Layer

Yue Qiu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transformation mechanisms of mercury in the marine boundary layer, finding limited contribution of continental anthropogenic emissions to particulate bound mercury (PBM). The study suggested that PBM likely experienced oxidation of Hg-0 by Br radicals and subsequent adsorption of Hg2+, as well as photoreduction influenced by organic compounds. The research highlights the significant role of photoreduction in influencing mercury in the MBL.

Isotopic compositions of atmospheric total gaseous mercury in 10 Chinese cities and implications for land surface emissions

Xuewu Fu et al.

Summary: The study found that the seasonal variations in TGM isotopic compositions and concentrations in 10 Chinese cities were likely controlled by land surface emissions with highly negative delta Hg-202 signatures, rather than atmospheric oxidation chemistry, vegetation activity, or residential coal combustion. The amplitudes of seasonal variations in TGM concentrations and Delta Hg-199 were significantly correlated with the simulated soil GEM emission flux.
