Organophosphate esters in Chinese rice: Occurrence, distribution, and human exposure risks

Summary: Limited information is available regarding the exposure risk of organophosphate esters (OPEs) through rice consumption in China. This study collected 234 rice samples from 25 provinces or cities in China and detected 16 OPEs. Each rice sample was contaminated with at least 5 OPEs, indicating the widespread occurrence of OPEs in Chinese rice. The concentrations of sigma 16 OPEs ranged from 1.46 to 552.65 μg/kg dry weight, with an average of 64.74 μg/kg dry weight.

Neurodevelopmental toxicity of organophosphate flame retardant triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) on zebrafish (Danio rerio) at different life stages

Summary: As a substitute for PBDEs, TPhP is widely used in daily products and living surroundings, but information on its neurodevelopmental toxicity is lacking. This study investigated the effects of TPhP exposure on zebrafish neural development and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Results showed that TPhP exposure reduced survival rate, hatchability, heart rate, body length, and caused malformations in zebrafish. It also led to abnormal locomotor behaviors and impaired panic avoidance reflex. TPhP induced oxidative stress, activated mitochondrial signaling pathways, and affected apoptosis, resulting in visual impairment.

This study compared the impact of different BFRs on DNA damage in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The extent of damage varied among the different BFRs, with TBBPA causing the most significant changes. Additionally, the tested compounds did not form adducts with DNA, suggesting that the observed damage was likely caused by indirect DNA-damaging agents.
