Natural and Technical Phytoremediation of Oil-Contaminated Soil

Leonid Panchenko et al.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of natural and technical phytoremediation approaches in decontaminating oil-polluted soil. The research examined 20 oil-contaminated sites of different contamination types and levels. Technical remediation with specific plants and agrotechnical treatment achieved a higher yearly decontamination rate compared to natural phytoremediation with native vegetation. It is believed that rhizodegradation is the main mechanism for both phytoremediation approaches.

Current Trends in Bioaugmentation Tools for Bioremediation: A Critical Review of Advances and Knowledge Gaps

Olga Muter

Summary: Bioaugmentation is widely used in soil bioremediation, wastewater treatment, and air biofiltration, and it can significantly improve the biodegradation performance of contaminated areas. However, current analyses do not provide a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms responsible for bioaugmentation. There is no universal mechanism for bioaugmentation under different environmental conditions, contaminants, and technological concepts. Further analysis is needed to strengthen the theoretical basis and predict bioremediation processes under specific conditions.

Phytoremediation: Where do we go from here?

Kuok Ho Daniel Tang

Summary: While phytoremediation is a cost-effective and sustainable method for removing contaminants from soil, its conventional practice is limited by long treatment time and variable efficiencies. This review explores innovative approaches to enhance phytoremediation, including the use of omics, omes, and soil amendments. The integration of these techniques can improve the mobility, accumulation, transfer, and degradation of contaminants in transgenic plants, as well as increase their resistance to heavy metals. Additionally, soil amendments can enhance bioavailability and improve soil conditions for phytoremediation. The integration of bioinformatics and artificial intelligence is crucial for optimizing phytoremediation efficiency.

Evaluation of human health and ecological risk of heavy metals in water, sediment and shellfishes in typical artisanal oil mining areas of Nigeria

Davies Ibienebo Chris et al.

Summary: Heavy metal contamination in water and sediment is a serious concern in Nigeria. This study evaluated the ecological and human health risks of heavy metals in water, sediments, and shellfish along the Opuroama Creek in Niger Delta. The results showed significant ecological risk in sediments, particularly with Cadmium (Cd), and potential cancer risks from exposure to Cd and Chromium (Cr) in the area. The study recommends further health analysis and measures to reduce oil spills while ensuring sustainable livelihoods for the local population.

The potential of biochar as a microbial carrier for agricultural and environmental applications

Shiv Bolan et al.

Summary: Biochar is an effective carrier for microbial inoculants due to its properties that promote microbial life. It contains organic carbon, nutrients, and functional groups that facilitate microbial adhesion and proliferation. Moreover, biochar-based microbial inoculants have been shown to enhance the persistence and colonization of microbes in soil and plant roots, benefiting soil biochemical processes and remediation of soil contamination. Future research should focus on improving carrier material performance and expanding the potential applications of this emerging biochar-based technology.

Prospects of emerging PAH sources and remediation technologies: insights from Africa

Kabari Sam et al.

Summary: Remediation of polluted environmental media is crucial for achieving the goals of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Africa's natural-resource dependent economies face numerous contaminated sites from mining and other activities, leading to increased exposure to carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Widespread PAH contamination has been observed, and ineffective remedial methods have resulted in residual contaminant levels exceeding regulatory thresholds. Bioremediation shows promise as a sustainable option, with low emissions, environmental impact, and cost. Integrating biological and physico-chemical approaches can effectively address various concentrations of PAH contamination.

Summary: The application of bacterial consortia of hydrocarbon degraders can enhance bioremediation of crude oil-contaminated sites. Different consortia developed from bacterial strains isolated from contaminated sites demonstrated varying crude oil degradation abilities, with Consortium D showing the highest degradation rates. Using isolates from the same origin site in consortium formation can improve biodegradation efficiency.

Implementing contaminated land remediation in Nigeria: Insights from the Ogoni remediation project

Kabari Sam et al.

Summary: Environmental contamination by hydrocarbons in Nigeria has led to negative effects on human health and the environment. The Nigerian Government has established the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) to manage and restore oil-contaminated land. However, HYPREP faces challenges such as bureaucracy, capacity gaps, and a weak stakeholder engagement strategy. The slow implementation of emergency measures, corruption, and lack of infrastructure for hazardous materials management are also issues. Lessons can be learned from other contaminated land management regimes to improve HYPREP's effectiveness.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different in situ chemical oxidation technologies on soil microorganisms and total petroleum hydrocarbon degradation. The findings indicate that permanganate is the most suitable oxidant for the process, and chemical oxidation plays a dominant role in TPH removal. Additionally, the addition of oxidants alters the indigenous bacterial communities in the soil.

Degradation of perfluorooctane sulfonate via in situ electro-generated ferrate and permanganate oxidants in NOM-rich source waters

Sean T. McBeath et al.

Summary: A novel process involving the in situ electrochemical generation of ferrate and permanganate oxidants, in circumneutral conditions, from low concentration aqueous iron (Fe2+) and manganese (Mn2+), is investigated for the treatment of the ubiquitous and highly recalcitrant micro-pollutant, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). The study showed that while permanganate had little effect on PFOS removal, coupling EO with ferrate generation and oxidation significantly increased degradation, surpassing the effectiveness of solely EO.PFOS degradation rates increased with increasing current density and initial Fe2+ concentration.
