Comparative life cycle assessment of seawater desalination technologies enhanced by graphene membranes

Clara Skuse et al.

Summary: Graphene oxide (GO)-enhanced membranes can effectively reduce the environmental impacts of seawater desalination via reverse osmosis (RO) and membrane distillation (MD) technologies. The study shows that using GO-enhanced membranes in RO systems can decrease the impacts by 3-7% and avoid the release of 380-850 kt CO2 eq. per year globally. The MD-GO scenarios have 27-34% lower impacts compared to MD scenarios. However, using solar-thermal energy instead of natural gas in MD desalination would lead to even lower impacts in nine categories than RO powered predominantly by fossil fuels.

A Content Review of Life Cycle Assessment of Nanomaterials: Current Practices, Challenges, and Future Prospects

Nurul Umairah M. Nizam et al.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review of 71 previous studies on the life cycle assessment of nanomaterials from 2001 to 2020, highlighting the lack of comprehensive LCA studies on the environmental impacts of NMs until end-of-life stages in most previous research. Recommendations for future studies include reporting more detailed and transparent data, considering environmental impacts and potential risks throughout the life cycle of NMs, adopting a transparent characterization model, and conducting toxicity, uncertainty, and sensitivity assessments to analyze exposure pathways further. The findings of this study contribute towards future research on LCA NMs, especially considering the limited understanding of mechanisms and pathways involved in the release of NMs into the environment.
