Heavy Metals Accumulation in Tissues of Wild and Farmed Barramundi from the Northern Bay of Bengal Coast, and Its Estimated Human Health Risks

Tanha Tahity et al.

Summary: The study evaluated metal concentrations in different organs of Barramundi fish and found that heavy metal concentrations were higher in farmed fish than in wild fish, possibly due to environmental conditions and dietary element concentrations. Although some metal concentrations exceeded national and international threshold limits, overall, all studied heavy metals were below the maximum permissible limits.

Summary: The study analyzed the element content in pork meat from conventional and animal welfare farms in South Korea, finding higher levels of potassium, iron, manganese, and nickel in animal welfare pork meat, while trace and toxic trace elements were lower than standard values. Principal component and linear discriminant analyses explained the highest variance in the group based on toxic elements.

Summary: This study assessed the levels of various elements in beef samples from Uganda and evaluated the safety of consuming such beef against WHO limits. The study found that non-essential elements, especially chromium and nickel, had high health and cancer risks due to higher levels in the samples.

Determination of toxic elements in meat products from Serbia packaged in tinplate cans

Branislav Stojanovic et al.

Summary: The study found that toxic elements in different types of canned meat products were generally lower than the permissible levels set by current food regulations. While the storage period did not significantly impact the level of toxic elements, higher concentrations were observed in samples stored for longer periods. It is recommended to continuously monitor heavy metal content in food and assess their risk to human health due to the possibility of raw material and food additive contamination.

Toxic Metals in Wild Ungulates and Domestic Meat Animals Slaughtered for Food Purposes: A Systemic Review

Davies Veli Nkosi et al.

Summary: The presence of toxic metals in harvested game meat poses a concern for public health and meat safety. Developing countries face issues such as lack of regulations, undefined product limits for specific species, and inadequate monitoring and control of heavy metals in the game meat supply chain. Lead remains the top threat for toxic metal contamination in game meat animals.

Dorota Cygan-Szczegielniak

Summary: The study explored the relationships between nutritive elements and toxic metals in red deer, revealing significant correlations and high variability in individual tissues and organs. Accumulation of specific metals in certain tissues or organs can impact their concentrations in other matrices or promote increased content in other tissues or organs.

Detection, Distribution and Health Risk Assessment of Toxic Heavy Metals/Metalloids, Arsenic, Cadmium, and Lead in Goat Carcasses Processed for Human Consumption in South-Eastern Nigeria

Emmanuel O. Njoga et al.

Summary: The study investigated the detection, distribution, and health risk assessment of toxic heavy metals/metalloids (THMs) in goat carcasses processed for human consumption in South-Eastern Nigeria. Results showed that at least one THM was detected in 56% of the carcasses, with all THMs having estimated daily intakes above recommended safe limits. Target hazard quotient (THQ) and hazard index (HI) were below unity, indicating no non-carcinogenic risks. Recommendations include limiting anthropogenic activities contributing to THM contamination in goat production/processing lines and implementing screening for THM contamination in Nigerian slaughterhouses.

Content of total aflatoxin, lead, and cadmium in the bovine meat and edible offal: study of their human dietary intake, health risk assessment, and molecular biomarkers

Ahmed Aljazzar et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the residual contents of AFTs, Pb, and Cd in the edible tissues of cattle reared in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. Additionally, potential molecular biomarkers for xenobiotic exposure in cattle were investigated, with significant upregulation of mRNA expressions of CYP1A1, NQO1, MT1A, and HSP70 observed in comparison with the muscle. These findings suggest the possible use of CYP1A1, NQO1, MT1A, and HSP70 as potential biomarkers for cattle exposure to AFTs, Pb, and Cd.
