Microplastic contamination in commercial fish species in southern coastal region of India

Thilagam Harikrishnan et al.

Summary: Due to concerns over food safety and human health, the contamination of commercial fish species with microplastics (MPs) has become a global issue. This study examined the presence of MPs in different marine fish species of significant commercial value captured off the south coast of India. The findings revealed a high accumulation of MPs in the gills and guts, with an average of 3.2-7.6 MPs per fish. The study also identified four different types of polymers in the fish tissues. These results highlight the degree of microplastic contamination in commercial fish species and emphasize the need for comprehensive measures to prevent plastic pollution in the coastal regions of south India.

Wet wipes and disposable surgical masks are becoming new sources of fiber microplastic pollution during global COVID-19

Tong Hu et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for wet wipes and masks during the global COVID-19 outbreak poses a potential environmental threat due to their plastic fiber composition, which can release microplastic pollution into the environment. Proper handling and disposal of these items are crucial to prevent further ecological damage.

Microplastics in Demersal Sharks From the Southeast Indian Coastal Region

Madhuvandhi Janardhanam et al.

Summary: The study investigates the accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in sharks collected from the Southeast Indian coastal zone. It reveals that demersal sharks in this area have ingested MPs, with a higher concentration found in the gastrointestinal tract than in the gills. The majority of the MPs are blue and pale white in color, with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 2 mm. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy identifies polypropylene, polyacrylamides, and polyethylene as the main polymers. This study provides the first scientific data on MPs and associated fiber ingestion in shark species in the Bay of Bengal habitat.

Challenges and strategies for effective plastic waste management during and post COVID-19 pandemic

Kumar Raja Vanapalli et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the challenges of plastic waste management, calling for immediate actions such as scientific sterilization and sealed disposal of contaminated plastic wastes, as well as investments in circular technologies and environmentally friendly materials. International cooperation and policy advocacy are also crucial in addressing the issue.

An emerging source of plastic pollution: Environmental presence of plastic personal protective equipment (PPE) debris related to COVID-19 in a metropolitan city

Justine Ammendolia et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in production, consumption, and disposal of personal protective equipment (PPE), mainly made of single-use plastic. The study conducted in the metropolitan city of Toronto, Canada found that disposable gloves were the most common PPE debris item, followed by face masks and disinfectant wipes. High densities of PPE debris were observed in grocery store parking lots and hospital districts, while lower densities were found in residential areas and recreational trails. Proper disposal methods for PPE debris should be improved through municipal efforts informed by waste pathways.

Summary: The nationwide lockdown in response to COVID-19 pandemic led to a temporary pause in anthropogenic activities, resulting in significant reductions in key urban air pollutants and improvements in water quality in Chennai, a coastal megacity. However, there was an overall increase in biomedical wastes, mainly plastic, during the pandemic period.

Negative impacts of realistic doses of spherical and irregular microplastics emerged late during a 42 weeks-long exposure experiment with blue mussels

Thea Hamm et al.

Summary: This study exposed juvenile mussels to environmentally realistic doses of PVC and PS microplastics for 42 weeks, finding minimal negative effects on mussel performance, with lower SOD activity in gills of mussels exposed to PS even at the lowest dose. Growth and CI were not impaired, indicating that these specific microplastics pose only a minor threat to blue mussel populations at current pollution levels.

Jiaji Sun et al.

Summary: Surgical masks are widely used during the COVID-19 pandemic, but improper disposal may lead to serious microplastic pollution in coastal marine environments. Research shows that discarded masks could release over 1370 trillion microplastics globally in 2020, with a daily release rate of 396 billion, impacting marine ecosystems through ingestion by marine organisms.

COVID-19: Performance study of microplastic inhalation risk posed by wearing masks

Lu Li et al.

Summary: Wearing face masks has become the new normal worldwide due to the global spread of COVID-19. This study found that wearing masks significantly reduces the inhalation risk of particles, including microplastics, even after prolonged use. Different types of masks pose varying risks of microplastic inhalation, with N95 masks posing the least risk. Reusing masks after disinfection processes can increase the risk of inhaling microplastics.

The impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on marine litter pollution along the Kenyan Coast: A synthesis after 100 days following the first reported case in Kenya

Eric Okuku et al.

Summary: The study examined the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on marine litter pollution in Mombasa, Kilifi, and Kwale counties of Kenya in June 2020, revealing that urban beaches had a higher proportion of COVID-19 related items due to purchasing habits and lifestyle choices. In contrast, recreational beaches showed minimal presence of COVID-19 related products, likely due to the beach closure directive as a contingency measure. Overall, beach closures and restricted movement helped reduce litter leakage into the marine environment.
