Plant diversity has stronger linkage with soil fungal diversity than with bacterial diversity across grasslands of northern China

Congwen Wang et al.

Summary: The interactions between plants and soil microbes play crucial roles in modulating the function and stability of terrestrial ecosystems. The study found that plant diversity is positively correlated with soil fungal diversity, particularly for predicted arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and saprotrophic fungi. However, the correlation between plant and soil bacterial diversity varies by phyla and functional guilds.

Grassland soil carbon sequestration: Current understanding, challenges, and solutions

Yongfei Bai et al.

Summary: Grasslands act as important soil carbon sinks, storing about one third of global terrestrial carbon stocks. Plant diversity increases soil organic carbon storage by enhancing carbon inputs and promoting microbial contributions. Improved grazing management and biodiversity restoration provide cost-effective solutions for climate change mitigation in grasslands.

Aboveground community composition and soil moisture play determining roles in restoring ecosystem multifunctionality of alpine steppe on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Yudan Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that grassland cultivation and fencing can significantly promote the ecosystem multifunctionality of degraded alpine steppes. Aboveground plant community composition has a greater impact on EMF of alpine steppes, and combining abiotic factors with biotic factors can better explain EMF.

More drought leads to a greater significance of biocrusts to soil multifunctionality

Yan-gui Su et al.

Summary: Plant diversity, soil bacterial diversity, biocrust development, and SMF show geographic patterns along an aridity gradient in northern China, with biocrust development influencing soil functions related to carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles. Overall, this study highlights the different effects and pathways of biocrusts on SMF in arid and semi-arid regions, providing insights into how biocrust development promotes soil multifunctionality and enhancing our understanding of the biodiversity-SMF relationship in varying aridity conditions.

Determining the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on the ecosystem multifunctionality in a desert-oasis ecotone

Hengfang Wang et al.

Summary: This study conducted at the Ebinur Lake Wetland Nature Reserve in Xinjiang, China, investigated the relationship between ecosystem multifunctionality, nutrient cycling, and community vertical structures. Results showed that diversity attributes and environmental factors play significant roles in influencing ecosystem multifunctionality and nutrient cycling. Moreover, biotic and abiotic factors were found to explain ecosystem multifunctionality better than nutrient cycling, highlighting the importance of assessing community diversity for preventing desertification in drylands.

Soil abiotic properties and plant functional diversity co-regulate the impacts of nitrogen addition on ecosystem multifunctionality in an alpine meadow

Xiaochen Liu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that nitrogen addition decreased aboveground plant functions while increasing soil microbial functions and ecosystem multifunctionality. Soil dissolved organic carbon and community weighted mean for plant traits were identified as important factors driving aboveground plant functions, while soil nitrogen and functional dispersion were key factors affecting soil microbial functions and ecosystem multifunctionality.

Diversity of plant and soil microbes mediates the response of ecosystem multifunctionality to grazing disturbance

Ruiyang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing grazing intensity significantly reduced ecosystem multifunctionality (EMF) and most individual ecosystem functions, as well as the diversity of plants and microbes. Plant diversity played a more important role in mediating the response of EMF to grazing disturbance, compared to soil microbial diversity.
