Economic and environmental analysis of plastics pyrolysis after secondary sortation of mixed plastic waste

Daniel G. Kulas et al.

Summary: Plastic usage has increased rapidly in recent years, but recycling rates have not kept pace resulting in the majority of waste plastic being landfilled in the United States. New chemical recycling technologies, such as pyrolysis, are needed to increase recycling rates. However, pyrolysis faces challenges related to feed bridging and high cost of waste plastic feedstock.

Economic Viability and Engine Performance Evaluation of Biodiesel Derived from Desert Palm Date Seeds

Mohammed Kamil et al.

Summary: This study developed a model for optimal conditions in biodiesel production using desert palm date seeds, and assessed the financial viability of a small-scale biodiesel plant. Biodiesel blends were compared to traditional diesel in terms of technical performance, with biodiesel outperforming in exhaust gas temperature while traditional diesel had higher engine power, thermal efficiency, and fuel economy. The study demonstrates that date seed oil has excellent potential as a feedstock for biodiesel production due to its use of existing waste materials, cleaner performance, and economic viability.

Characterization of pyrolysis oil produced from organic and plastic wastes using an auger reactor

M. M. Hasan et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the suitability of pyrolysis oils produced from organic and plastic wastes for engine application. The study conducted experiments using different waste materials and temperatures, and characterized the properties of the obtained pyrolysis oils using various analysis techniques. The results showed that the oils derived from organic wastes had limitations such as higher viscosity and density, while the oil obtained from HDPE met most criteria to be an engine fuel, although further testing in an engine is needed for confirmation.

Distilled Waste Plastic Oil as Fuel for a Diesel Engine: Fuel Production, Combustion Characteristics, and Exhaust Gas Emissions

Weerachai Arjharn et al.

Summary: This study investigates the combustion characteristics and exhaust gas emissions of waste plastic oil (WPO) and distilled waste plastic oil (WPOD) fuels in a diesel engine. It is found that both WPO and WPOD fuels increase nitrogen oxide emissions compared to diesel fuel. However, they have lower smoke index due to their shorter carbon chains. Furthermore, their high calorific value and cetane index contribute to improved brake thermal efficiency and lower brake specific fuel consumption.

Automobile fuels (diesel and petrol) from plastic pyrolysis oil-Production and characterisation

M. I. Jahirul et al.

Summary: Plastics like HDPE, PS, and PP can be converted into liquid crude oil through pyrolysis, with PS producing gasoline and HDPE and PP predominantly producing diesel. The fuel qualities of the liquid products meet the automotive fuel standards, indicating their potential as viable energy sources. This study provides a foundation for the industrial production of automotive quality fuels from plastic solid waste.

Comparative techno-economic evaluation of potential processing schemes for petroleum crude oil distillation

Sunil Kumar et al.

Summary: The energy consumption and cost parameters of two commonly used crude oil distillation schemes in operating refineries were compared with two new schemes using different crude oils. The study results show that the proposed schemes can reduce the consumption of stripping steam, furnace duty, and energy cost, providing opportunities for revamping existing units and designing new units to address challenges associated with the process.
