Comparative effects of oral exposure to 2, 4, 6-tribromophenol and decabromodiphenyl ether in Nile tilapia

Ciro Alberto de Oliveira Ribeiro et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the acute and chronic toxicity of BDE-209 and TBP on Oreochromis niloticus, showing that these compounds can cause redox imbalance and tissue damage. There is a need to reassess the exposure risk of these compounds on biota.

Ocean warming and acidification degrade shoaling performance and lateralization of novel tropical-temperate fish shoals

Angus Mitchell et al.

Summary: The study found that ocean acidification reduced shoal cohesion, with mixed-species shoals showing lower cohesion than temperate-only shoals under climate stressors. Tropical fish became bolder under ocean acidification, while temperate fish became bolder with increasing temperature, but ocean acidification dampened the boldness of temperate fish.

Combined effects of ocean warming and acidification on marine fish and shellfish: A molecule to ecosystem perspective

Sritama Baag et al.

Summary: With the human population expected to exceed nine billion by 2050, there will be increased pressure on marine ecosystems. It is predicted that ecosystem functioning, species distribution, food webs, and trophic interaction dynamics will be severely jeopardized in the coming decades due to ocean warming and acidification. Urgent focus is needed on comprehensive and ecologically realistic studies to understand organism responses to climate change for sustainable capture fisheries and aquaculture.

Gestational exposure to BDE-209 induces placental injury via the endoplasmic reticulum stress-mediated PERK/ATF4/CHOP signaling pathway

Yan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the adverse effects of prenatal exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) on placental development and function. The results showed that gestational exposure to BDE-209 significantly reduced placental weight, impaired placental vascular development, and induced placental cell apoptosis. Furthermore, BDE-209 exposure also affected placental transport and endocrine function. Mechanistically, BDE-209 activated the endoplasmic reticulum stress-mediated PERK/ATF4/CHOP signaling pathway in mouse placentas, leading to placental injury.

Habitat-dependent trophic transfer of legacy and emerging halogenated flame retardants in estuarine and coastal food webs near a source region

Yanan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the trophic transfer of legacy and emerging halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) in estuarine and coastal food webs. The results showed higher accumulation of HFRs in benthic organisms compared to fish. The bioaccumulation of HFRs in coastal food webs depended on the habitat, with similar profiles observed in benthic organisms and sediments.

Laterality and fish welfare-A review

Flavia Berlinghieri et al.

Summary: Concern for fish welfare has grown in recent years, with many states and territories now protecting fish through animal welfare regulations. A greater understanding of fish behavior, particularly factors such as laterality, can lead to the development of welfare indicators to enhance fish welfare. Research investigating laterality in fishes may provide important insights into enhancing fish welfare.

Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) exposure to lactating mice perturbs steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis in adult male offspring

Debarshi Sarkar et al.

Summary: The study showed that maternal exposure to BDE-209 during lactation significantly affects male reproductive health in adult offspring, leading to altered testicular histoarchitecture, decreased testosterone production, down-regulation of certain steroidogenic markers, as well as interference with germ cell dynamics and oxidative status in testes.

The impact of chronic unpredictable early-life stress (CUELS) on boldness and stress-reactivity: Differential effects of stress duration and context of testing

Barbara D. Fontana et al.

Summary: Through experiments on zebrafish larvae exposed to chronic unpredictable early-life stress, it was found that 7 days of CUELS led to increased boldness and decreased anxiety response, while not altering approach to a novel object. This study provides important insights into the behavioral changes induced by early-life stress.

Ocean acidification but not elevated spring warming threatens a European seas predator

Katharina Alter et al.

Summary: The study found that future pCO(2) and constant high temperature had negative impacts on the survival and morphological deformities of garfish embryos, while warming may benefit their survival. Garfish in the Baltic Sea are likely to benefit from increased spring warming rates, but not from the increase in pCO(2), which could have significant implications for the trophodynamic structure and function of the coastal food web in the future.

Temperature increase and its effects on fish stress physiology in the context of global warming

Sebastien Alfonso et al.

Summary: Global warming is expected to impact the stress physiology of fish through chronic temperature increases, potentially compromising their fitness and ability to cope with additional stressors. Controlled laboratory studies show that temperature increases can induce acute stress responses in fish, highlighting the ecological relevance of rapid temperature changes in certain situations.
