Significant coal combustion contribution to water-soluble brown carbon during winter in Xingtai, China: Optical properties and sources

Dapeng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and sources of atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) in Xingtai, a small city in the North China Plain, based on the analysis of daily PM2.5 samples collected from 2018 to 2019. The results showed that the concentration of BrC was highest in winter and strongly correlated with benzo(b)fluoranthene (BbF), indicating that coal combustion was the main source of BrC in this season. The study also found a linear relationship between the mass absorbing efficiency of BrC and the aerosol pH, suggesting that aerosol acidity positively influenced the optical properties and formation of BrC in the city.

Summary: The Chinese government has implemented the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPC) to reduce air pollutants emission. This study collected PM2.5 samples from three Chinese cities and investigated the pollution characteristics of PAHs and oPAHs. The results showed that the measured cities still had considerable PAHs pollution, and the concentrations and composition of pollutants were significantly influenced by season and source.

Gas-to-Aerosol Phase Partitioning of Atmospheric Water-Soluble Organic Compounds at a Rural Site in China: An Enhancing Effect of NH3 on SOA Formation

Shaojun Lv et al.

Summary: This study investigates the partitioning process of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) and its impact on secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formation. The results show that WSOC primarily partitions to the organic phase during dry periods and to aerosol liquid water during humid periods. NH3 plays a crucial role in the formation of WSOC aerosols.

Kinetics, Products, and Brown Carbon Formation by Aqueous-Phase Reactions of Glycolaldehyde with Atmospheric Amines and Ammonium Sulfate

Alyssa A. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: Glycolaldehyde is a water-soluble aldehyde that is commonly found in the atmosphere. It reacts more slowly than other species with ammonium sulfate, methylamine, and glycine. In cloud chamber experiments, it was found that deliquesced glycine and ammonium sulfate particles take up glycolaldehyde and methylamine and form brown carbon at a faster rate than predicted by bulk liquid measurements. This suggests that reactions at air-water interfaces may play a significant role in the formation of brown carbon.

Rapid transition of aerosol optical properties and water-soluble organic aerosols in cold season in Fenwei Plain

Aodong Du et al.

Summary: The study conducted three-month measurements of aerosol optical properties (AOP) in the Fenwei Plain, showing rapid transitions in AOP during the cold season with an increasing role of absorbing aerosol and brown carbon. Chemical apportionment highlighted the different impacts of primary and secondary aerosol on AOP, while positive matrix factorization illustrated a clear transition in water-soluble organic aerosol (WSOA) composition from secondary organic aerosol dominance to primary organic aerosol dominance.

Connecting the Light Absorption of Atmospheric Organic Aerosols with Oxidation State and Polarity

Xiaotong Jiang et al.

Summary: This study fractionated ambient organic aerosols (OA) from an urban environment according to polarity and found that high-polar compounds had a significantly higher oxygen to carbon ratio (O/C) compared to low-polar compounds. The presence of nitrogen-containing functional groups was found to enhance the absorptivity of low-polar compounds, while further oxidation of high-polar compounds likely led to bleaching and fragmentation of chromophores.

Winter brown carbon over six of China's megacities: light absorption, molecularcharacterization, and improved source apportionment revealed by multilayerperceptron neural network

Diwei Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the light absorption properties, chemical functional bonds, and sources of brown carbon (BrC) in six megacities in China. The results showed that BrC was more abundant in northern cities and had primary emission sources such as biomass burning and coal combustion. Secondary formation processes also contributed to BrC, especially in the southern cities. These findings provide a basis for effective control measures to reduce the impacts of BrC on regional climates and human health.

Composition and sources of brown carbon aerosols in megacity Beijing during the winter of 2016

Xingru Li et al.

Summary: Brown carbon (BrC) is a type of atmospheric particles that can strongly absorb visible and near-ultraviolet radiation, impacting global climate change. This study in urban Beijing during the winter of 2016 found that methanol-extracted BrC exhibited high light absorption coefficient and two categories of chromophores, with nitroaromatic compounds (NACs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contributing significantly to BrC's light absorption. The research also indicated that secondary formation played an important role in BrC during haze episodes, emphasizing the impact of aqueous-phase transformation on BrC aerosols in urban Beijing during winter.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of oxidation and photochemical reactions on atmospheric chromophores, finding that these reactions drive the oxidation state evolution of the chromophores. The research also identifies the production of secondary chromophores from highly-oxygenated HULIS, suggesting a degradation product of less-oxygenated HULIS. Furthermore, the study suggests that atmospheric oxidation processes are the main driving reaction for the transformation of atmospheric chromophores.

Aging of Atmospheric Brown Carbon Aerosol

Rachel F. Hems et al.

Summary: Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) aerosol is emitted by numerous primary sources and formed by secondary sources, being chemically complex. As BrC aerosol ages through various chemical and physical processes in the atmosphere, its chemical composition and optical properties change significantly, impacting climate. Research in the past decade has expanded our understanding of BrC reactions in both gas and condensed phases, with a focus on gas phase reactions leading to BrC formation, aqueous and in-cloud processes, and aerosol particle reactions.
