Modeling particulate nitrate in China: Current findings and future directions

Summary: This article reviews recent modeling studies on the formation mechanism, trends, and response to emission controls of particulate nitrate (pNO(3)) in China. The results show that while chemical transport models can capture the spatial-temporal variations of pNO(3), there are still uncertainties and biases due to parameterization and model limitations. Heterogeneous hydrolysis of N2O5 dominates nocturnal pNO(3) formation, but its contribution varies among studies. The increasing pNO(3) fraction in recent years is mainly attributed to reduced SO2 emissions, enhanced atmospheric oxidation capacity, and weakened nitrate deposition. Reducing NH3 emissions is found to be the most effective control strategy. More field measurements and research are needed to understand the relationships of pNO(3) with other factors.

Spatiotemporal variations of nitrogen and phosphorus deposition across China

This study collected precipitation samples from 41 sites in China and found significant spatial and seasonal variations in the deposition fluxes of various nutrients. The study provides a new map of atmospheric nitrogen and phosphorus deposition.

Effects of warming and nitrogen input on soil N2O emission from Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau: a synthesis

Summary: This study investigates the effects of warming and nitrogen addition on N2O emission in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP). The results show that warming has a negative effect on N2O emission from non-permafrost soils, while nitrogen addition has a positive impact. The study also suggests that the QTP is unlikely to become a globally significant N2O source in the near future.

Atmospheric silicon wet deposition and its influencing factors in China

Summary: This study investigated the spatio-temporal patterns of atmospheric dissolved silica (dSi) wet deposition in China based on data collected from the China Wet Deposition Observation Network. The results showed regional variations in dSi deposition, with higher deposition in the Southwest, North, and South China and lower deposition in the Northwest and Northeast China. These findings provide valuable scientific data for exploring the potential impact of dSi deposition on carbon sequestration in aquatic ecosystems.

Hysteresis response of wet nitrate deposition to emission reduction in Chinese terrestrial ecosystems

Summary: China is undergoing a massive socio-economic transformation and has implemented emission reduction measures to control air pollution. The study found that wet acid deposition in China declined overall from 2013 to 2018, mainly due to decreased SO42- deposition. Despite evidence of a decline in NOX emissions, wet NO3 deposition in Chinese terrestrial ecosystems showed no significant trends during the same period, suggesting a hysteresis response to emission reductions.
