Effects of a Light Crude Oil Spill on a Tropical Coastal Phytoplankton Community

Sebastien Putzeys et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of different crude oil concentrations on the nearshore phytoplanktonic community in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The results showed that Bacillariophyceae dominated in oiled treatments and were associated with hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria, while Chlorophyceae played a key role in the control conditions. This research contributes to understanding phytoplankton community shifts during crude oil spills in subtropical oligotrophic regions.

De-coupled phytoplankton growth and microzooplankton grazing in a simulated oil spill event in mesocosms

Chi Hung Tang et al.

Summary: Microzooplankton play a crucial role in connecting primary production and higher trophic levels in marine ecosystems. However, crude oil pollution can disrupt their grazing behavior and the relationship with phytoplankton, potentially leading to phytoplankton blooms.

Biotechnological production of β-carotene using plant in vitro cultures

Lorena Almagro et al.

Summary: Beta-carotene is a biologically active compound that can be sustainably produced through plant in vitro cultures and genetic engineering. It functions as an antenna pigment and antioxidant in plants, providing protection against photooxidative damage. In humans, it acts as a precursor of vitamin A, preventing skin damage and protecting against cancer.

Multiple benthic indicators are efficient for health assessment of coral reefs subjected to petroleum hydrocarbons contamination: A case study in the Persian Gulf

Mahshid Oladi et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of oil-related activities on coral reefs using multiple indicators, with bioaccumulation of PAH in coral tissues, live coral cover, and the Sediment Constituent (SEDCON) Index identified as the most robust proxies. The study emphasized the need for routine monitoring and mitigation practices to maintain healthy reefs in the study areas, particularly in locations subjected to PAH pollution.

Immediate effects of the 2019 oil spill on the macrobenthic fauna associated with macroalgae on the tropical coast of Brazil

Nykon Craveiro et al.

Summary: The 2019-2020 Brazil oil spill disaster significantly impacted the shallow-water reefs of Paiva beach, leading to changes in the epifaunal communities associated with the algae Jania capillacea and Penicillus capitatus. While most macrofaunal communities recovered to pre-disaster levels after two months, polychaeta diversity remained low. Further long-term monitoring is necessary to evaluate the chronic effects of the oil spill event.

Marine Algal Sensitivity to Source and Weathered Oils

Katherina A. Softcheck

Summary: Toxicity tests were conducted on microalgae and a macroalga using samples collected from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, revealing that the macroalga and green alga D. tertiolecta were largely unaffected, while Isochrysis galbana was the most sensitive species overall. Physically dispersed source oils were generally more toxic than weathered oils, and the protectiveness of chronic toxic units effectively identified observed algal growth rate inhibitions across different oil types despite the impact of dispersants.
