Screening potential toxicity of currently used herbicides in the freshwater amphipod Gammarus fossarum based on multi-level biomarker responses to field-realistic exposures

Jeremie D. Lebrun et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the potential toxicity of currently used herbicides in Gammarus fossarum using multi-level biomarkers. The results showed that these herbicides caused increased locomotion and respiration in the crustaceans, as well as disruptions in moulting, antioxidant responses and cell integrity. Statistical analyses identified herbicide clusters likely to trigger common sets of biological responses. These findings demonstrate unexpected toxicological effects of currently used herbicides in non-target wild animals.

Cryptic Species in Ecotoxicology

Jonas Jourdan et al.

Summary: The use of genetic methods has allowed the discovery of previously undistinguishable species based on morphology. However, these cryptic species are rarely considered in ecotoxicology, which can lead to false extrapolations and lack of reproducibility in experiments. It is crucial to address the ecological differentiation and sensitivity of closely related cryptic species for evolutionary ecology, conservation biology, and regulatory ecotoxicology.

Infection with acanthocephalans increases tolerance of Gammarus roeselii (Crustacea: Amphipoda) to pyrethroid insecticide deltamethrin

Judith Kochmann et al.

Summary: Crustacean amphipods, serving as intermediate hosts for parasites, also act as sensitive indicators of environmental pollution in aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated the infections of Gammarus roeselii with two species of Acanthocephala - Pomphorhynchus laevis and Polymorphus minutus - in different pollution levels of the Rhine-Main metropolitan region. Higher prevalence and intensities of P. laevis were found at downstream sites close to a large wastewater treatment plant. The study also examined the sensitivity of infected and uninfected amphipods towards the insecticide deltamethrin, revealing an infection-dependent difference in sensitivity. The results suggested a beneficial effect of acanthocephalan infection for G. roeselii at polluted sites.

Outside the Safe Operating Space of the Planetary Boundary for Novel Entities

Linn Persson et al.

Summary: This article suggests that the safe operating space of the planetary boundary for novel entities is exceeded due to the increasing production and releases exceeding the global capacity for assessment and monitoring. Plastic pollution is highlighted as a major concern. The article presents an impact pathway from the production of novel entities to their impacts on Earth system processes and proposes several criteria for control variables. Urgent action is recommended to reduce the harm associated with exceeding the boundary by reducing the production and releases of novel entities.

Extensive rain events have a more substantial impact than advanced effluent treatment on the endocrine-disrupting activity in an effluent-dominated small river

Aliaksandra Shuliakevich et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of wastewater treatment plants on endocrine-disrupting compounds in the Wurm River, showing that ozonation treatment can completely reduce the activity in water, but sediment activity may be influenced by rain events and potentially released into the water body from rainwater overflow basins. Monitoring both water and sediment phases is necessary to accurately profile endocrine-disrupting activity. Additionally, CALUX (R) assays are suitable for studying endocrine-disrupting activity distribution in different river compartments and WWTP effluents.

Assessing the genotoxic potential of freshwater sediments after extensive rain events-Lessons learned from a case study in an effluent-dominated river in Germany

Aliaksandra Shuliakevich et al.

Summary: Effluents from wastewater treatment plants and rainwater overflow basins can introduce genotoxic micropollutants into aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated the genotoxic potential of freshwater sediments in a small anthropogenically impacted river in Germany during dry periods and after rainfall events. The results showed that organic sediment extracts contained genotoxic compounds, primarily polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, nitroarenes, aromatic amines, and polycyclic heteroarenes.

Parasite infection influences the biomarker response and locomotor activity of Gammarus fossarum exposed to conventionally-treated wastewater

Louisa E. Rothe et al.

Summary: Modern wastewater treatment plants cannot completely remove micropollutants, such as pharmaceuticals and pesticides, from effluents entering the aquatic environment. The study found that the response of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus fossarum to different exposure conditions was mainly driven by parasite infection. This suggests that parasites may act as additional biotic stressors in multiple stressor scenarios, playing an important role in the response of organisms to chemical stressors. Future ecotoxicological studies and assessments should consider parasite infection as an additional test parameter.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) affects behaviour, but does not change oxidative status in freshwater shredders

Magdalena Czarnecka et al.

Summary: Artificial light at night (ALAN) can alter the circadian rhythms of animals and have an impact on their physiology and behavior. The effects of ALAN are related to the increased light level and the spectral composition of the light. Behavioral modifications induced by ALAN seem more pronounced than changes in physiology and can be the main driver of disturbances in the processing of organic matter in freshwater ecosystems by invertebrate shredders.

Small-scale population structuring results in differential susceptibility to pesticide exposure

Martin Grethlein et al.

Summary: This study examines the population structure and phenotypic differentiation of Gammarus fossarum clade 11, a crustacean species in Central European riverine networks. The researchers find stable population structure over time and observe differences in susceptibility to a pesticide. These findings suggest that limited dispersal capacity is reflected not only in population structure but also in small-scale variation in susceptibility to anthropogenic disturbance.

Phototactic behaviour and neurotransmitter profiles in two Daphnia magna clones: Vertical and horizontal responses to fish kairomones and psychotropic drugs

Marina Bellot et al.

Summary: Animal behavioural responses are increasingly used in environmental risk assessment, but the lack of standardization remains a challenge. This study aimed to test the use of a horizontal multi-well plate maze set up to assess phototactic fish induced responses in D. magna. The results suggest that this method could provide a simple and efficient way to evaluate phototactic behavior in D. magna and potentially other species.

High-Throughput Phototactic Ecotoxicity Biotests with Nauplii of Artemia franciscana

Yutao Bai et al.

Summary: Analysis of sensorimotor behavioral responses to stimuli such as light can provide enhanced relevance in prioritizing chemical risks. However, there have been minimal studies on using invertebrate phototactic behaviors in aquatic ecotoxicity testing due to technical limitations. In this research, a high-throughput phototactic biotest system for brine shrimp nauplii was demonstrated, along with a novel bioinformatic approach for analyzing phototactic behaviors at scale. The preliminary data showed consistent light-seeking behaviors in nauplii without habituation, and exposure to sub-lethal concentrations of insecticides resulted in perturbed light seeking behaviors. These findings suggest that phototactic bioassays have the potential to be a sensitive, responsive, and cost-effective method in behavioral ecotoxicology.

Advances in real-time monitoring of water quality using automated analysis of animal behaviour

Adam Bownik et al.

Summary: Monitoring freshwater quality and potential contamination is crucial for human health and aquatic ecosystems. Although advancements have been made in automated sampling and continuous analysis of water parameters, real-time warning capabilities for unknown chemical mixtures are limited. Biological early warning systems offer sensitive and integrative water quality sensing by continuously monitoring behavioral and physiological parameters of aquatic species.

Summary: Chemicals have long been acknowledged to impact human and wildlife behavior. Recent technological advancements have highlighted the adverse effects of contaminants on organismal behavior and ecological outcomes. Concerns about the lack of consideration of behavior in regulatory ecotoxicology have led to the exclusion of many studies from chemical risk assessments. A workshop with international representatives has resulted in consensus perspectives and recommendations to improve the integration of basic and translational sciences with regulatory practices.
