Linking Switzerland's PM10 and PM2.5 oxidative potential (OP) with emission sources

Stuart K. Grange et al.

Summary: Particulate matter (PM) is a major air pollutant with significant health effects. Current monitoring methods do not provide information on the biological toxicity of PM. A sampling campaign in Switzerland showed that oxidative potential (OP) of PM varies over time and space. Metal components and specific organic tracers from wood combustion were identified as the most important factors in explaining and predicting OP. Controlling anthropogenic road traffic and wood burning sources can effectively reduce OP and potential biological harm.

Global, regional and national trends of atmospheric ammonia derived from a decadal (2008-2018) satellite record

Martin Van Damme et al.

Summary: The study utilized infrared satellite data to reveal a significant global increase in NH3 concentration over the past 11 years, driven primarily by regions in East Asia, Africa, North America, and Europe, with a decrease observed in southwestern India. National trends in NH3 emissions were analyzed in relation to changing factors such as anthropogenic and pyrogenic NH3 emissions, meteorological conditions, and sulfur and nitrogen oxides emissions impacting NH3 atmospheric lifetime. Additionally, a case study on the 'Dutch Nitrogen crisis' of 2019 in the Netherlands was conducted.
