Life cycle assessment of seabass and seabream production in the Mediterranean area: A critical review

Michele Zoli et al.

Summary: The production of seabream and seabass in Mediterranean countries has steadily increased and sustainability has become a key concern. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is considered the most suitable approach to assess the environmental impact of fish production. This review analyzes LCA studies on seabass and seabream farming in the Mediterranean area, highlighting the main methodological choices, critical points, and key results. The environmental impact of feed and the Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR) are consistently identified as major factors, but more research is needed to evaluate fish farming with sustainable feeds. Overall sustainability assessments should also consider energy, economic, and social aspects.

Sustainability of urban aquaponics farms: An emergy point of view

Luiz H. David et al.

Summary: Aquaponics is a sustainable food production system that combines the advantages of aquaculture and hydroponics. It mimics the natural biological process and is considered a viable alternative for urban regions with limited agricultural land and water resources. This study uses emergy synthesis to assess the sustainability of urban aquaponics farms in Brazil, focusing on the materials used and ecosystem services provided. Results show that the choice of materials greatly influences the energy demand, and aquaponics systems have more efficient feeding management compared to traditional aquaculture. The inclusion of ecosystem services highlights the educational and tourism potential of aquaponics.

Environmental and economic assessment of mariculture systems using a high share of renewable energy sources

Marija Korican et al.

Summary: The increased demand for fish products has led to investments and modernization in aquaculture, but it has also resulted in higher energy needs and greater environmental impact. This study examines the use of renewable energy sources in mariculture systems and evaluates their environmental and economic performance. The results show a reduction in emissions and an increase in profitability when renewable energy sources are utilized.

Rice-crayfish coculture delivers more nutrition at a lower environmental cost

Qiang Xu et al.

Summary: Rice-crayfish coculture produces more nutrition per hectare compared to rice monoculture and crayfish monoculture, but has a larger environmental footprint. By increasing productivity per hectare and improving fertilizer and feed use efficiency, the environmental burdens of rice-crayfish coculture could be further reduced.

Haochen Hou et al.

Summary: The environmental impact of tiger puffer farming in China was evaluated using a life cycle assessment (LCA), with a focus on energy consumption and carbon emissions. The study identified the marine aquatic ecotoxicity potential as the largest contributor to the environmental impact. Industrial recirculating aquaculture was found to be the most significant farming stage. Recommendations were made to improve the environmental performance, including the use of renewable energy sources and the exploration of new production strategies.

Assessing seafood nutritional diversity together with climate impacts informs more comprehensive dietary advice

Marta Bianchi et al.

Summary: Quantitative analyses have shown that consuming wild, small fish and salmon from the open ocean, as well as farmed mussels and oysters, can provide the highest nutritional benefit with the lowest greenhouse gas emissions. These findings highlight the potential of seafood in meeting nutritional needs while reducing climate impact. The specific species and production methods need to be considered in order to improve nutrition and climate performance.

Summary: The Water-Energy-Food (WEF) nexus approach is promoted as a tool for sustainable resource management by connecting the three fundamental pillars of water, energy, and food. Nutrient profiling (NP) models are reviewed to categorize foods and evaluate diets, with the NRF9.3. model identified as the most suitable option for a WEF nexus index. This model provides the best characteristics for assessing diets and foods compared to other models like HEI.

Asael Greenfeld et al.

Summary: Aquaponics is promoted as a sustainable agricultural practice, but its economic sustainability is challenging due to external benefits necessitating public intervention. A proposed aquaponic system for producing ornamental fish and lettuce was estimated to have an environmental cost of 10,700 EUR annually, mainly attributed to industrial processes. Life cycle assessment and economic valuation methods can potentially assess the cost-effectiveness of aquaponics from an environmental perspective.
