Health hazards of hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) and its microbial reduction

Pooja Sharma et al.

Summary: Industrial effluents are a major source of hexavalent chromium pollution, which is a serious environmental issue due to its persistence and toxicity. Current physico-chemical techniques for its removal are not environmentally friendly, making microbial remediation a potential solution.

HBM4EU chromates study-Overall results and recommendations for the biomonitoring of occupational exposure to hexavalent chromium

Tiina Santonen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to provide EU relevant data on occupational Cr(VI) exposure and evaluated the validity of different biomarkers for assessing Cr(VI) exposure, involving 399 workers from nine European countries. The use of chromium in urine was found to be an effective biomonitoring method. The study also highlighted the importance of multinational collaboration in occupational biomonitoring studies to support policy actions aiming to reduce chemical exposure.

Summary: This review explores the mechanisms of chromium uptake, transport, and accumulation in soil-plant systems to reduce its toxicity and ecological risk, focusing on recent advancements from 2017 to 2021. It also highlights the reduction and immobilization mechanisms using organic and inorganic reductants for Cr(VI) remediation in contaminated soils, as well as research challenges and potential prospects in the biogeochemical behavior of chromium in soil-plant systems and its environmental impacts.

Amelioration of Chromium-Induced Oxidative Stress by Combined Treatment of Selected Plant-Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria and Earthworms via Modulating the Expression of Genes Related to Reactive Oxygen Species Metabolism in Brassica juncea

Pooja Sharma et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the effects of plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and earthworms on the antioxidant defense system in Brassica juncea seedlings under chromium (Cr) stress. The results showed that the addition of PGPR and earthworms enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes, reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, and improved plant biomass.

Mechanism of chromium-induced toxicity in lungs, liver, and kidney and their ameliorative agents

Rituraj Chakraborty et al.

Summary: Chromium, a heavy metal, can adversely affect human health if accumulated in organs such as the lungs, liver, and kidneys. Exposure to chromium can cause oxidative stress, cell apoptosis, and other damages, which can be alleviated by regulating antioxidant balance and restoring key protein levels.

Trace Metals Contamination in Riverine Captured Fish and Prawn of Bangladesh and Associated Health Risk

Md. Khalid Hasan et al.

Summary: Trace metals contamination is prevalent in riverine environments in Bangladesh, particularly in the Dhaleshwari River. The contamination is primarily caused by rapid urbanization and industrialization, leading to potential health risks for humans consuming contaminated fish and prawn species. Studies have shown that while most species have low noncarcinogenic health risks, some species exceed recommended values for harmful effects, suggesting a need for intervention to mitigate the contamination and minimize health risks in Bangladesh.

Biomarkers of effect as determined in human biomonitoring studies on hexavalent chromium and cadmium in the period 2008-2020

Celia Ventura et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify effect biomarkers linking Cr(VI) and Cd exposure to selected adverse outcomes (AOs) including cancer, immunotoxicity, oxidative stress, and omics/epigenetics. Most commonly analyzed effect biomarkers for Cr(VI) exposure were those indicating oxidative stress and DNA or chromosomal damage, while for Cd exposure, 0-2-microglobulin and N-acetyl-0-D-glucosaminidase were well-established biomarkers for renal tubular dysfunction. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and kidney injury molecule-1 could serve as sensitive biomarkers of acute kidney injury in response to both metals. More HBM data is needed to confirm the significance of omics-based biomarkers associated with Cr and Cd exposure.
