Emission behavior and impact assessment of gaseous volatile compounds in two typical rural domestic waste landfills

Pengyu Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated gaseous volatile compounds and odorous compounds from rural domestic waste landfill sites in north China and southwest China. The results showed that organic acids, chlorinated compounds, and aromatics were the most abundant compounds in both landfills. The landfill in southwest China had higher ozone formation potential and higher chronic toxicity and cancer risk. Concentrations of benzene, propylene oxide, propylene, trichloroethylene, and N-nitrosodiethylamine, as well as exposure duration, daily exposure time, and annual exposure frequency, significantly influenced the risk levels. Controlling and reducing gaseous pollutants from landfills, especially rural residential landfills, could improve rural sanitation.

Characterization of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) associated with fine aerosols in ambient atmosphere of high-altitude urban environment in Sikkim Himalaya

Khushboo Sharma et al.

Summary: The present study aims to measure PM2.5 and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the ambient atmosphere of the Sikkim Himalaya to understand the influence of natural and anthropogenic activities on aerosol loading and their chemical characteristics. The study found that the seasonal mean concentrations of PM2.5 and PAHs were high during autumn and low during summer season. The high concentrations of PAHs were mainly attributed to heavy traffic activities, with other possible sources being fossil fuel combustion and biomass burning.

Saibal Ghosh et al.

Summary: The rapid mining activities of mica mines in Giridih district, India have resulted in toxic metal pollution of agricultural soil, posing significant environmental and health risks. The highest concentration of toxic elements was found in the soil samples collected closest to the mica mines. The most promising pollutants were identified as Ni, Cr, Cd, and Pb, which carried higher environmental risks.

Characteristics and pollution potential of leachate from municipal solid waste landfills: Practical examples from Poland and the Czech Republic and a comprehensive evaluation in a global context

Anna Podlasek et al.

Summary: The formation of leachate is mainly due to the percolating of rainwater through the landfill and the processes taking place inside the landfill. This study aims to evaluate and compare the physicochemical characteristics of leachate, demonstrate the time variability of leachate parameters during landfill stabilization, present the relationships between leachate characteristics, and indicate the factors determining leachate composition variability. The Leachate Pollution Index (LPI) was used to assess leachate pollution and its potential. The results showed differences in leachate characteristics and pollution potential between the Lubna and Zdounky landfills.

Impacts of garbage classification and disposal on the occurrence of pharmaceutical and personal care products in municipal solid waste leachates: A case study in Shanghai

Jingjing Zhang et al.

Summary: The implementation of garbage classification policy in China has led to changes in the occurrence of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in leachate generated from municipal solid wastes (MSWs). By investigating 49 target PPCPs in the leachates of classified MSWs, it was found that the implementation of garbage classification policy reduced the mass load of PPCPs in leachates to be treated. These findings are helpful for designing and managing better MSW treatment and disposal processes to minimize the emission of PPCPs from leachates.

Organophosphate pesticide residues in environmental and biological matrices: Occurrence, distribution and potential remedial approaches

Odunayo T. Ore et al.

Summary: The prevalent occurrence of organophosphate pesticides in the environment has severe adverse impacts on environmental matrices and humans due to bioaccumulation and direct exposure. Despite regulatory interventions, these pesticides are still found in human blood, soil, water, and air. Therefore, conventional and newly developed methods are needed for comprehensive mitigation. The agricultural application is the main source, and neurotoxic effects on humans cannot be ignored. Adequate measures to regulate storage and usage, as well as development of eco-friendly approaches, are recommended.

Use, exposure, and environmental impacts of pesticides in Pakistan: a critical review

Sajid Rashid et al.

Summary: The excessive use of pesticides in Pakistan, a leading country in pesticide use, poses significant threats to human health and the environment. This study reviewed 85 scientific publications and found that Pakistan has high pesticide consumption, with a drastic increase of 1169% in the past two decades. Organochlorines were identified as the most problematic pesticides due to their environmental occurrence and known toxicities. The misuse or overuse of pesticides by farmers, driven by insufficient knowledge about risks, leads to high occupational exposure.
