Drought impacts on microbial trait distribution and feedback to soil carbon cycling

Ashish A. Malik et al.

Summary: This article introduces a framework that links drought-impacted microbial processes to rates of soil carbon decomposition and stabilisation in order to advance understanding of microbial drought response mechanisms affecting soil carbon cycling.

Spatial Variability of Microbial Communities and Salt Distributions Across a Latitudinal Aridity Gradient in the Atacama Desert

Jianxun Shen et al.

Summary: This study examined the variations in salts and microbial communities along a latitudinal aridity gradient of the Atacama Desert, as well as the reshuffling of microbiomes after a heavy rainfall event. The research shed light on the structure of xerotolerant, halotolerant, and radioresistant microbiomes and their response to changes in water availability from the hyperarid northern desert to the less arid southern transition region.

Leave no stone unturned: individually adapted xerotolerant Thaumarchaeota sheltered below the boulders of the Atacama Desert hyperarid core

Yunha Hwang et al.

Summary: The study discovered significantly different microbial communities in soils below and beside boulders in the hyperarid core of the Atacama Desert, with highly adapted Thaumarchaeaota possessing ammonia oxidation and carbon fixation potential. Genomes of Ca. Nitrosodeserticola provide insights into a thaumarchaeal lineage found in globally distributed terrestrial habitats characterized by various environmental stresses, expanding the genetic repertoire of Thaumarchaeota and the diversity of microbiome functioning in hyperarid ecosystems.

Microbial anhydrobiosis

Jason Bosch et al.

Summary: The loss of cellular water and resulting low cytosolic water activity are major stress factors for organisms, leading to molecular and physiological adaptations. While the changes within cells during desiccation and rehydration have been extensively studied, there is still limited knowledge on the metabolic status of organisms in the desiccated state, highlighting significant gaps in our understanding of molecular and biochemical processes in dry cells.

Microbial potential for denitrification in the hyperarid Atacama Desert soils

Di Wu et al.

Summary: The research shows that despite being one of the driest regions in the world, the soils of the Atacama Desert still have the capability to support microbial growth, including denitrification. Extreme weather events and aridity have relatively minor impacts on soil microbial communities, but could potentially lead to nitrate loss and increased N2O emissions in the region.
