Endoplasmic reticulum stress and lipids in health and diseases

Cenk Celik et al.

Summary: The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is an organelle that regulates cellular pathways and activates the unfolded protein response (UPR) in response to ER stress. The UPR restores ER homeostasis and induces apoptosis if the stress persists. The UPR also plays a role in maintaining lipid homeostasis and other cellular functions.

Mitochondria-associated endoplasmic reticulum membrane: Overview and inextricable link with cancer

Xi Yang et al.

Summary: The mitochondrial-associated membrane (MAM) is a platform that promotes communication between the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and mitochondria. It plays a crucial role in various physiological processes and its dysregulation can impact cancer cell fate. This review summarizes the structure of MAM and the functions of MAM-resident proteins in tumorigenesis, and discusses the mechanisms by which natural compounds induce cancer cell apoptosis through ER stress.

DBP and BaP co-exposure induces kidney injury via promoting pyroptosis of renal tubular epithelial cells in rats

Jing Chen et al.

Summary: A study found that the combined exposure to dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) has more severe effects on kidney health than individual exposure to either DBP or BaP. The combined exposure increased histopathological abnormalities, renal function impairment, IL-1 beta and IL-18 excretion, and LDH release in rat renal tubular epithelial cells. Moreover, it upregulated marker molecules of pyroptosis and activated TLR4/NF-Kappa B signaling in the kidney. These findings highlight the importance of studying the combined effects of DBP and BaP on kidney injury.

Gut microbiota may contribute to the postnatal male reproductive abnormalities induced by prenatal dibutyl phthalate exposure

Tongtong Zhang et al.

Summary: Phthalate, an environmental endocrine disruptor, has been found to cause direct and intergenerational male reproductive damage. This study explored the effects of prenatal exposure to DBP on testicular injury and offspring gut microbiota, revealing a connection between gut dysbiosis and testicular damage in the offspring. Understanding the role of gut microbiota in reproductive function is crucial, and further research is needed to investigate the link between environmental pollution and human health.

Bisphenol A induces pyroptotic cell death via ROS/NLRP3/Caspase-1 pathway in osteocytes MLO-Y4

Yun Zhang et al.

Summary: BPA induces pyroptotic death of osteocytes via the ROS/NLRP3/Caspase-1 pathway, increasing apoptosis and up-regulating protein expressions related to inflammation and cell damage. The oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction caused by BPA are reversed by ROS scavengers and mitochondrial antioxidants, highlighting potential therapeutic targets for BPA-induced bone cell damage.

Calcium Overload and Mitochondrial Metabolism

Lauren L. Walkon et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial calcium plays a dual role, with low levels being essential for ATP production and high levels leading to mitochondrial dysfunction. In moderate amounts, calcium inhibits ATP synthesis. The mechanism of mitochondrial dysfunction during calcium overload remains unclear, but it may involve changes in mitochondrial ultrastructure and enzyme activity.

Dibutyl phthalate-induced oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis in grass carp hepatocytes and the therapeutic use of taxifolin

Yuan Cui et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the plasticizer DBP caused oxidative stress and inflammation leading to apoptosis in grass carp hepatocytes. The antioxidant TAX alleviated DBP-induced apoptosis, with simultaneous treatment showing better results. This research provides a theoretical basis for future in vivo studies on DBP toxicity and suggests potential methods to counteract its effects.

Nimodipine attenuates dibutyl phthalate-induced learning and memory impairment in kun ming mice: An in vivo study based on bioinformatics analysis

Biao Yan et al.

Summary: The study suggests that Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and Nimodipine (Nim) might affect biological processes through the calcium signaling pathway, MAPK signaling pathway, and apoptosis pathway. Nimodipine has a neuroprotective role in attenuating learning and memory impairment induced by DBP exposure by reducing intracellular Ca2+ levels, inhibiting the ERK1/2 pathway, and alleviating apoptosis in hippocampal tissue.

Necroptosis, pyroptosis and apoptosis: an intricate game of cell death

Damien Bertheloot et al.

Summary: Cell death is a fundamental physiological process in all living organisms, playing important roles in embryonic development, organ maintenance, aging, immune responses, and autoimmunity. Recent research has significantly increased our understanding of the mechanisms orchestrating different types of programmed cell death and how they affect the balance of cell fates. Various modalities of cell death, such as apoptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis, have been studied to highlight both common and unique pathways and their impact on the surrounding cells and the organism as a whole.
