Ecological risk assessment of pesticides in urban streams of the Brazilian Amazon

Andreu Rico et al.

Summary: The use of pesticides has increased notably in households and peri-urban areas of the Amazon, but the presence of these contaminants and their ecological risks in freshwater ecosystems remain unexplored. This study assessed the exposure to pesticides in the Amazon River and urban streams, finding widespread pesticide contamination in urban and peri-urban areas of the Brazilian Amazon. Pesticide residues may pose risks to freshwater organisms, particularly invertebrates.

The exposure in ovo of embryos belonging to Amazonian turtle species Podocnemis expansa (Testudines) to commercial glyphosate and fipronil formulations impairs their growth and changes their skeletal development

Juliana dos Santos Mendonca et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of pesticide exposure on the viability, growth, and bone alterations of Podocnemis expansa eggs. The results showed that the tested pesticides did not affect the viability of the eggs, but led to decreased body mass and impaired development in the embryos. Bone malformation was also observed in some individuals. Pesticides accumulated in the eggshells at concentrations related to the exposure level.

On the future of the giant South American river turtle Podocnemis expansa

German Forero-Medina et al.

Summary: Conservation efforts for the South American river turtle Podocnemis expansa started in the 1960s, but uncertainties remain around population trends and the number of nesting females protected. Over 85 conservation programmes in Brazil are protecting 147,000 nesting females, with the top six sites harboring over 100,000 females and being prioritized for conservation action. More data and global conservation efforts are needed to address the historical population decline and ensure the species' survival.

Evaluation of the genotoxic, mutagenic, and histopathological hepatic effects of polyoxyethylene amine (POEA) and glyphosate on Dendropsophus minutus tadpoles

Alice Lopes et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the genotoxic, mutagenic, and histopathological hepatic responses of Dendropsophus minutus tadpoles to acute exposure to the herbicide glyphosate and the surfactant polyoxyethylene amine. Results showed that both glyphosate and polyoxyethylene amine have potential genotoxic, mutagenic, and hepatotoxic effects in the tadpoles, with polyoxyethylene amine showing a higher impact. Findings emphasize the need for continued monitoring of amphibian populations in agricultural areas to mitigate the long-term impacts of pollutants on anuran tadpoles.

Three-bestseller pesticides in Brazil: Freshwater concentrations and potential environmental risks

Emilia Marques Brovini et al.

Summary: Brazil is the second largest exporter of agricultural products globally, with widespread use of pesticides in crops, posing threats to water resources and organisms. While most environmental concentrations are below allowed limits according to Brazilian legislation, they still pose a high risk to aquatic ecosystems.

Glyphosate concentrations in global freshwaters: are aquatic organisms at risk?

Emilia Marques Brovini et al.

Summary: The study found that the majority of countries worldwide do not have restrictive legislation for aquatic glyphosate concentrations, potentially posing risks to aquatic organisms. Glyphosate concentrations above 1 μg L-1 may present high risks to aquatic organisms.
