Interaction of microplastics and nanoplastics with natural organic matter (NOM) and the impact of NOM on the sorption behavior of anthropogenic contaminants - A critical review

Imran Ali et al.

Summary: The interaction of microplastics and nanoplastics with natural organic matter has opened up new research prospects. This interaction can affect the characteristics and behavior of plastic particles in the environment, as well as the fate of pollutants. This review critically examines and provides recommendations for further research on this interaction.

Toxicological interactions of microplastics/nanoplastics and environmental contaminants: Current knowledge and future perspectives

Jacky Bhagat et al.

Summary: This review provides the current state of knowledge on the toxicological interaction of microplastics/nanoplastics with other environmental contaminants, focusing on the types of interactions and the depth of mechanistic understanding. It points out the lack of research in certain areas related to heavy metals and chemicals. Recommendations are made for considering environmental factors in future studies.

Summary: Tiny plastic particles, including microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs), are considered emerging contaminants with formation mechanisms such as mechanical abrasion. Research on the environmental fate and ecosystem toxicity of NPs is limited compared to MPs, calling for further exploration in these areas.

Research progress of nanoplastics in freshwater

Bin Zhang et al.

Summary: With the increased production and use of plastic products, environmental pollution due to their continuous entry into water environments is a growing concern. While microplastics have been the focus of many studies, nanoplastics (NPs) have received less attention despite their smaller size and potential greater harm to organisms. This paper summarizes the environmental fate of NPs, the current techniques for their extraction and characterization, and the toxic effects NPs may have on biological organisms. Further research is needed to fully understand the impact of NPs on the environment and living organisms.

Nanoplastic-Induced Genotoxicity and Intestinal Damage in Freshwater Benthic Clams (Corbicula fluminea): Comparison with Microplastics

Zhenling Li et al.

Summary: The study found that nanoplastics preferentially trigger processes related to cellular components and induce apoptosis through the mitochondrial pathway in various tissues, especially in indirectly contacted tissues, while microplastics induce innate immune response and activate complement and coagulation cascades. Both types of plastics can cause inflammation and epithelial damage in the intestines, and notably alter the gut microbial community structure. Unlike microplastics, the impact of nanoplastics on the intestinal microflora is limited, but it can cause more severe damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier.

Effects of Nanoplastics on the Dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae Hulburt from the Perspectives of Algal Growth, Oxidative Stress and Hemolysin Production

Su-Chun Wang et al.

Summary: The research found that high concentrations of polystyrene nanoplastics (nano-PS) significantly inhibit the growth of marine toxigenic dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae, leading to increased oxidative stress and production of hemolytic toxins. The effects of nano-PS on A. carterae are closely linked to concentration, surface properties, and exposure time.

Summary: This study compared the toxic effects of micro-and nano-sized polystyrene microbeads on a freshwater algal species, revealing that nano-sized particles had a higher toxicity and increased levels of ROS and MDA in algal cells. Additionally, the algae increased the content of extracellular polymeric substances and antioxidant enzymatic activities to counteract the adverse effects caused by the micro-and nanoplastics.

Nanoplastics are neither microplastics nor engineered nanoparticles

Julien Gigault et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics have unique characteristics compared to microplastics and engineered nanomaterials, including transportation properties, interactions with natural colloids and light, high proportion of particle molecules on the surface, bioavailability, and diffusion times for plastic additives release. Nanoscale plastics must be considered distinct from both microplastics and engineered nanomaterials.

Cell Cycle Control of Nanoplastics Internalization in Phytoplankton

Neng Yan et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the cell cycle plays a crucial role in the bioaccumulation and internalization of nanoparticles, with different cell cycle stages showing varying characteristics in NP accumulation. Factors such as clathrin-mediated endocytosis capacity, algal cell membrane permeability, and exopolymer substance (EPS) thickness are identified as key determinants in NP bioaccumulation during the cell cycle.
