Impact of urbanization on soil microbial diversity and composition in the megacity of Shanghai

Lan Liu et al.

Summary: Urbanization has a significant impact on the biodiversity of soil microbial communities, with increased urbanization associated with slightly homogenized microbial communities. Soil prokaryotes and total fungi richness show a weak positive relationship with urbanization levels. Microbial phylotypes abundance demonstrate synchronous increases and decreases along urban gradients. Urbanization explains a portion of microbial variances in richness and community composition, although soil properties play a larger role in explaining the variances.

Niche use and co-occurrence patterns of zooplankton along a strong urbanization gradient

J. H. Pantel et al.

Summary: This study investigates niche use and co-occurrence patterns along an urbanization gradient. The results show that most species have conserved niche positions from rural to urban areas, but the niches of species occurring in both areas are partly unfilled in urban populations. Niche overlap is an important predictor of species co-occurrence. Urbanization has damaging effects on biodiversity, benefiting generalist species and making it difficult for species to occupy available niche space.

Urban soil properties distinguished by parent material, land use, time since urbanization, and pre-urban geomorphology

Nele Delbecque et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physico-chemical properties of urban soils with different parent materials in the historic city of Ghent, Belgium, and evaluated the effects of land use, time since urbanization, and pre-urban geomorphology on urban soil properties. The results showed that compositional differences between parent material types strongly influenced soil properties, and time since urbanization and pre-urban geomorphology were indicative of parent material type, soil properties, and human soil modifications.

Conversion of grassland to cropland altered soil nitrogen-related microbial communities at large scales

Xue Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of grassland conversion to cropland on soil nitrogen-related microbial communities in the farming-pastoral ecotone of northern China through amplicon sequencing. The results showed changes in microbial diversity and assembly processes, with higher AOB alpha diversity but lower NOB diversity in cropland soil. The microbial co-occurrence networks became less complex in cropland soil, indicating a shift from stochastic to deterministic processes in AOB community assembly.

Climate warming enhances microbial network complexity and stability

Mengting Maggie Yuan et al.

Summary: The authors studied the impact of long-term experimental warming on the complexity and stability of molecular ecological networks in grassland soil microbial communities. The results show that warming increased network complexity and stability, emphasizing the importance of preserving microbial interactions for ecosystem management in the face of climate change.
