Agricultural restructuring for reducing carbon emissions from residents? dietary consumption in China

Ziyue Yu et al.

Summary: In an effort to combat climate change, China aims to reach its peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. However, achieving these goals will require a significant reduction in carbon emissions. This study combines food consumption, climate change, and agricultural structure to design future scenarios and suggests dietary restructuring and agricultural restructuring to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Wildfire and climate change amplify knowledge gaps linking mountain source-water systems and agricultural water supply in the western United States

David M. Barnard et al.

Summary: Agricultural production in the western United States is affected by water supply from mountain source-water systems that are vulnerable to wildfires and climate change. This impacts water supply forecasting, which directly affects agricultural producers and irrigation managers who rely on snowmelt and streamflow forecasts for crop selection and irrigation scheduling. This short communication emphasizes the need for new research connecting source-water systems and agricultural production to improve forecasting accuracy and ensure sustainable food production in the western US.

Role of China's agricultural water policy reforms and production technology heterogeneity on agriculture water usage efficiency and total factor productivity change

Wasi Ul Hassan Shah et al.

Summary: China introduced the agricultural water conversion policy in 2012 to improve the efficiency of agricultural water usage and production technology in different regions. The study used various analysis methods to evaluate the impact of this policy, and found that agricultural water usage efficiency significantly increased after its implementation. The eastern region had better production technology compared to the western and central regions, and technological change was the main driver of productivity growth. Average productivity change showed a slight decline after the policy implementation, but the results were statistically significant.

Evaluation of energy consumption and environmental impacts of strawberry production in different greenhouse structures using life cycle assessment (LCA) approach

Masoumeh Mousavi et al.

Summary: This study used Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental impacts of two types of greenhouse structures (Quonset and Spanish) in strawberry production. The results showed that both types of structures had high energy consumption, with human labor and electricity being the main contributors. The environmental impacts of Spanish structures were higher due to their higher use of polyethylene and steel. The use of chemical fertilizers, electricity, and polyethylene were identified as the major environmental hotspots.

What is the potential to improve food security by restructuring crops in Northwest China?

Xian Liu et al.

Summary: Exploring the potential of crop type adjustment to improve regional food security, ecological security, and net economic benefits is significant for agricultural water management, green production, and sustainable development in drylands. This research introduces the virtual water trade theory into the optimization model of crop type to quantify the water footprint, carbon footprint, crop calories, and net economic benefits. By considering factors such as farmers' planting willingness and food trade, an open-ended crop type optimization model is constructed. The results show that using this model to guide crop type adjustment increases the calories and grey water footprint provided by regional crops and improves the benefits of blue water use and net economic benefits.
