Mechanistic Insights of a Thermoresponsive Interface for Fouling Control of Thin-Film Composite Nanofiltration Membranes

Daliang Xu et al.

Summary: Despite extensive research, fouling remains a major challenge for nanofiltration membranes. However, a highly antifouling membrane has been successfully fabricated by grafting poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) chains onto a bromine-containing polyamide layer. The resulting membrane exhibits double permeance compared to the pristine membrane, while maintaining the rejection of multivalent ions. Additionally, PNIPAM chains provide better deposition and adhesion resistance, reducing fouling and promoting flux recovery.

Characterizing the degradation of refractory organics from incineration leachate membrane concentrate by VUV/O3

Jinyu Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, a combined VUV and O3 process was used to treat incineration leachate membrane concentrate, achieving significant removal of COD by degrading refractory organics into simpler structures. Various analytical methods were employed to investigate the degradation mechanism and types of organics, indicating the effectiveness of the combined action of hydroxyl radicals and O3 in degrading macromolecular organics.

Removal of refractory organics and heavy metals in landfill leachate concentrate by peroxi-coagulation process

Dun Liu et al.

Summary: An efficient method based on the peroxi-coagulation (PC) process was developed for the treatment of landfill leachate concentrate. The PC process, which combines ·OH oxidation and iron hydroxide coagulation, showed higher treatment efficiency and lower cost compared to electro-Fenton (EF) and electrocoagulation (EC) processes. It achieved a high TOC removal rate and reduced the concentrations of all seven heavy metals in the final effluents below regulatory limits. Fluorescence analysis also demonstrated the effective removal of humic acids and fulvic acids by the PC process.

Sustainable vs. Conventional Approach for Olive Oil Wastewater Management: A Review of the State of the Art

Zakaria Al-Qodah et al.

Summary: The main goal of this review is to collect and analyze recently published research on the conventional and sustainable treatment processes for olive mill wastewater (OMW). Conventional treatment processes focus on meeting environmental regulations, while sustainable treatment processes aim to recover valuable constituents and treat the residual wastewater. This study highlights the advantages and potential applications of sustainable treatment methods, proposing a valorization approach to make OMW a sustainable resource with economic value.

Molecular level insights into HO? and Cl2-Mediated transformation of dissolved organic matter in landfill leachate concentrates during the Fenton process

Quanfa Zhong et al.

Summary: Cl2'- can be the dominant radical species in the treatment of high salinity wastewater. HO' accounted for the majority of DOM transformation in wastewater with low chlorine concentration, while Cl2'- accounted for a higher percentage in wastewater with high chlorine concentration. The reactivities of HO' and Cl2'- towards DOM were compared, and it was found that HO' preferentially reacted with compounds with low nitrogen content, while Cl2'- was more reactive towards compounds with higher nitrogen content.

Loose nanofiltration membrane custom-tailored for resource recovery

Shiwei Guo et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the development and applications of the emerging loose nanofiltration (LNF) membrane in resource recovery from biomass and wastewater. LNF membranes, with higher selectivity and lower operating pressure, are mainly prepared through phase inversion and interfacial polymerization, and are applied for the separation of saccharides, polyphenols, pigments, dyes, and salts to minimize environmental pollution.

A review on treatment of membrane concentrates generated from landfill leachate treatment processes

Ramazan Keyikoglu et al.

Summary: Landfill leachate (LL) is a highly toxic wastewater containing various pollutants, and the integration of membrane technologies is essential for its treatment. While achieving high pollutant removal efficiency, the drawback of producing hazardous membrane concentrates remains a challenge. The review provides a detailed overview of methods for treating membrane concentrates and highlights the importance of engineered combinations of techniques for satisfactory removal efficiencies.

Ferric ions mediated defects narrowing of graphene oxide nanofiltration membrane for robust removal of organic micropollutants

Sushuang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a GO nanofiltration membrane with narrow pore size distribution was successfully prepared by using Fe3+-mediated GO nanosheets and a targeted coating layer. The membrane showed high and steady rejections on various OMPs, even in the long-term operation, cross-flow filtration or under high-pressure, demonstrating enhanced antifouling ability and regulation of nano channels. This work proposes an innovative idea for constructing hydrophilic surface and narrow pore size distribution of NF membrane.

Recent developments in the preparation of improved nanofiltration membranes for extreme pH conditions

Gerrald Bargeman

Summary: Commercially available nanofiltration membranes often show limited stability at extreme pH conditions, leading to the need for further research and development to improve pH stable NF membranes with a range of molecular weight cut-offs. Recent developments include the use of interfacial polymerization to produce thin film composite membranes, but there is still room for improvement in order to meet the performance characteristics of the best commercially available NF membranes.
