A methodological review on self-healing asphalt pavements

B. R. Anupam et al.

Summary: Maintenance and rehabilitation at appropriate time are essential for asphalt pavements to serve their design lives. Self-healing technologies, such as incorporation of healing agents and heating methods, using nanomaterials and polymers as additives, have been developed to rectify defects internally. This paper provides an overview of the healing mechanisms, design, and implementation of self-healing technologies in asphalt pavements, and identifies areas for further research.

Performance evaluation of waterborne epoxy resin modified emulsified asphalt mixtures for asphalt pavement pothole repair

Ouming Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of waterborne epoxy resin (WER) modified asphalt emulsion on the construction properties and pavement performance of cold patch mixtures. The results showed that the use of WER improved the early strength and curing time of the cold patch mixtures and maintained good storage characteristics. The high-temperature and moisture stability of the cold patch mixtures increased with the dose of WER, but the low-temperature characteristic exhibited adverse trends.

Investigating rheological and healing properties of asphalt binder modified by disulfide-crosslinked poly(urea-urethane) elastomer br

Lei Lyu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel self-healing asphalt binder modified by polyurethane elastomer containing disulfide bonds, which enhances the healing capability of asphalt binder, especially at the early healing stage. The rheological analysis shows positive effects of the polyurethane elastomers on the rutting resistance at high temperatures and cracking resistance at low temperatures. The recommended optimum dosage of polyurethane elastomer for self-healing asphalt is found to be 6%.

Reinforcement of boron-nitrogen coordinated polyurethane elastomers with silica nanoparticles

Wenjuan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study reports on the development of nanocomposites with multiple dynamic moieties, including dynamic boronic ester covalent bonds in the polyurethane matrix and boron-nitrogen coordination bonds on the interface. The addition of surface-modified silica nanoparticles improves the dispersion and interface interaction of the polyurethane composites. Mechanical analysis shows that these modified composites exhibit high strength and toughness, with a significant increase compared to the pristine polyurethane. The coordination bonds in the matrix and interface also provide efficient energy dissipation during the tensile process.

The composition of the material phase responsible for the self-healing of macro-cracks in asphalt mortar beams

Daniel Grossegger et al.

Summary: Self-healing of asphalt is a flow process where bitumen flows into cracks to close them. The rheological behavior of bitumen is one of the main factors affecting self-healing, along with damage history, healing duration and pressure. The interaction between bitumen and filler influences the flow, suggesting that the material flowing into cracks during self-healing is a mixture of bitumen, filler, and potentially fine aggregates.

Dynamic chemistry based self-healing of asphalt modified by diselenide-crosslinked polyurethane elastomer

Lei Lyu et al.

Summary: In this study, asphalt binder was endowed with self-healing property through dynamic covalent chemistry by modifying the asphalt with diselenide-crosslinked polyurethane elastomer. The introduction of diselenide bonds enhanced the self-healing capability of polyurethane elastomer and asphalt binder, especially in the early stage after a fracture, opening up new perspectives for preparing asphalt with self-healing property.
