Peipei Tian et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the carbon footprints (CFs) of grains production in China based on agricultural statistics data of over 300 prefecture-level regions. Results show that the CFs of main grains production in main producing areas (MPA) account for a significant portion of the country's total, despite MPA's smaller farmland area. Different crop types show varied CF levels between MPA and non-main producing areas, which can help inform regional greenhouse gas mitigation strategies.

Inputs for staple crop production in China drive burden shifting of water and carbon footprints transgressing part of provincial planetary boundaries

Bianbian Feng et al.

Summary: Crop production has significant impacts on water resources and greenhouse gas emissions. This study assesses the water and carbon footprints of wheat, maize, and rice production in China, finding that agricultural inputs contribute a significant proportion to the footprints. The environmental burden caused by crop production and agricultural input production in certain regions exceeds the water and carbon boundaries. The study expands the scope of environmental impact assessments in agriculture and highlights the importance of managing the linkages between crop production and agricultural input supply chains for efficient water use and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.

Arable land and water footprints for food consumption in China: From the perspective of urban and rural dietary change

Daohao Yan et al.

Summary: Since the open-door policy, China's dietary pattern has undergone significant changes, with meat, vegetable oil, soybeans, and liquor requiring more arable land and water. Urban residents have higher per capita arable land and water footprints compared to rural residents. From 1983 to 2017, there has been a considerable increase in the total arable land and water footprints for food consumption. In the future, the demand for arable land and blue water footprints will continue to rise, but can be reduced under a balanced dietary pattern.

Disclosing the future food security risk of China based on crop production and water scarcity under diverse socioeconomic and climate scenarios

Lei Chen et al.

Summary: Climate change and human development may lead to a serious crisis in food security in China, especially in areas with water shortages and large grain production. A new framework combining water scarcity and crop production data was developed to measure China's food security risk under different scenarios. Results show that both water scarcity and crop production-water crisis in China would worsen during the 21st century. Higher food production does not necessarily mean lower food security risk, and ensuring food security in China in the next 40 years is crucial.
