Presence of pharmaceuticals and their metabolites in wild-living aquatic organisms - Current state of knowledge

Klaudia Swiacka et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a growing number of studies on pharmaceutical contamination of aquatic ecosystems, but questions and uncertainties remain regarding the distribution of these chemicals in water environments. Variability in data on the presence of pharmaceuticals in water bodies highlights the need for further research on the topic. Wild organisms have been used as research subjects since the early 1990s to study environmental contamination with pharmaceuticals, with a focus on the measurement of pharmaceutical levels in biological matrices to better understand their overall presence in aquatic environments.

Elevated urbanization-driven plant accumulation and human intake risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in crops of peri-urban farmlands

Anping Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of urbanization on the accumulation of PAHs in peri-urban farmland crops in the Yangtze River Delta region of China. The concentrations of PAHs in crops and soils in peri-urban areas were significantly higher than in rural areas. Root uptake contributed to plant accumulation, while gaseous absorption played a role in the enhanced influence of PAHs in peri-urban areas. The PAHs in peri-urban plants predominantly resulted from urbanization parameters such as coal combustion, vehicle emissions, and biomass burning. The intake risks of different crops varied, with rice having the highest intake risk. The study highlights the importance of considering the impact of anthropogenic pollutants from rapid urbanization on agricultural food safety.

Translocation, bioaccumulation, and distribution of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in plants

Bentuo Xu et al.

Summary: This review discusses the adverse effects of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) on plants and factors influencing the absorption and distribution of PFASs in plants. Bioaccumulation potential of PFASs in different plant structures is evaluated by calculating bioaccumulation factor (BAF). The results show that PFOA is the predominant compound accumulated in both soil and plant tissues, and different plant groups have varying potential BAF values.

The study of polar emerging contaminants in seawater by passive sampling: A review

Henry MacKeown et al.

Summary: Emerging Contaminants (ECs) in marine waters, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products, are of growing concern for the environment and human health. The low concentration levels and possible matrix interferences make their measurement in seawater challenging. Mass spectrometry combined with chromatographic techniques is the preferred method for studying seawater ECs due to its sensitivity and versatility. Passive sampling is a powerful approach for sample collection and pre-treatment. This review discusses the use of passive sampling coupled with mass spectrometry for studying polar ECs in seawater and argues for the combination of passive sampling with high resolution mass spectrometry for improved assessment.

Phragmites australis cav. As a bioindicator of hydromorphic soils pollution with heavy metals and polyaromatic hydrocarbons

Victor Chaplygin et al.

Summary: This study examines the ability of Phragmites australis Cav. to indicate soil pollution with heavy metals (HMs) and priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) through changes in the plant's ultrastructure. The results show that the concentrations of HMs and PAHs increase as the distance from the power station decreases and the direction of the prevailing wind (northwest) is approached. The highest concentrations of pollutants are found in the roots of the plants. The study also reveals changes in the ultrastructure of chloroplasts in P. australis affected by the accumulation of HMs and PAHs. The most severe damage to the cellular organelles is observed in plants located within 2.5 km from the emissions source and in the direction of the predominant wind.

Ornamental houseplants as potential biosamplers for indoor pollution of organophosphorus flame retardants

Yan Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) in indoor dust, air, and ornamental plants in Dalian, China, and found that ornamental plants can be used as biosamplers for certain OPFRs in indoor air. A predictive model was developed to assess the partitioning coefficients of OPFRs between indoor air and plants, using lipid content in leaf cuticle for improved accuracy and reliability. The results suggest that indoor ornamental plants have the potential to be used as biosamplers of OPFRs in indoor environments due to their convenience and low cost.
