Year-long evaluation of aerosol chemistry and meteorological implications of PM2.5 in an urban area of the Brahmaputra Valley, India

Shahadev Rabha et al.

Summary: In this study, the mass concentrations and chemical compositions of PM2.5 in an urban area of Northeast India were evaluated to determine their seasonal variations and the influence of meteorological factors. The results showed that PM2.5 mass was mainly contributed by water-soluble inorganic ions, carbonaceous matter, and inorganic elements. Winter season had the highest PM2.5 concentration, primarily due to water-soluble inorganic ions and carbonaceous matter. Meteorological factors and regional air transport significantly influenced PM concentrations in the study area.

Insights into sources and atmospheric processing at two polluted urban locations in the Indo-Gangetic plains from stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in ambient PM2.5

Gyanesh Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: The study analyzed PM2.5 samples collected from heavily polluted locations in Indo-Gangetic plains during wintertime to understand aerosol composition, emission sources, and atmospheric chemistry. The results showed that high molecular weight PAHs and organic carbon were major components of the aerosols. In addition, stable isotopes analysis indicated significant contributions from biomass burning and petroleum combustion. The study also found differences in the contribution of secondary organic carbon between the two locations.

A year-long study on PM2.5 and its carbonaceous components over eastern Himalaya in India: Contributions of local and transported fossil fuel and biomass burning during premonsoon

Sauryadeep Mukherjee et al.

Summary: A year-long study has characterized the fine mode carbonaceous aerosols over the high altitude urban atmosphere of Darjeeling in eastern Himalaya. The study found seasonal variability in aerosol abundance, with the highest levels in winter. The study also investigated the contributions of different sources to organic carbon and elemental carbon, providing valuable information for mitigation action plans.

Variabilities of? 13C and carbonaceous components in ambient PM 2.5 in Northeast India: Insights into sources and atmospheric processes

Adnan Mateen Qadri et al.

Summary: A year-long sampling campaign was conducted in the North-Eastern Region of India to study the sources and formation of carbonaceous aerosols in ambient PM2.5. The study found that PM2.5 mass concentration was highest in winter and post-monsoon seasons, with organic carbon concentration also higher during these periods. Local and regional air masses dominated during winter and post-monsoon, while long-range transported air masses influenced the background site during pre-monsoon and monsoon. The carbon isotope ratio and cluster/PSCF modeling suggested that aged aerosols influenced the carbon isotope ratio during pre-monsoon, while freshly emitted aerosols from biomass/biofuels were responsible for the lower ratio in winter and post-monsoon.

Summary: The characteristics and sources of carbonaceous aerosol in the winter atmosphere of Kolkata were mainly from secondary origin and fossil fuel combustion, with less contribution from biomass burning. Aerosol formation was higher during sunlight, indicating extensive secondary organic aerosol formation.

Temporal and spatial variability of carbonaceous species (EC; OC; WSOC and SOA) in PM2.5 aerosol over five sites of Indo-Gangetic Plain

Himadri S. Bhowmik et al.

Summary: The study in the Indo-Gangetic plain found that organic carbon (OC) dominates in the PM2.5 particles during winter, while water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) increases notably in summer. The high OC/EC ratio during winter and post-monsoon indicates biomass burning as the primary source, while WSOC shows a significant contribution from secondary sources with variations across different sites.

Understanding the origin of carbonaceous aerosols during periods of extensive biomass burning in northern India

Gyanesh Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: Post-harvest crop residue burning in North India leads to increased particulate matter concentrations, with PM2.5 emissions varying during different seasons. The carbonaceous aerosol fraction and sources differ between pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods, highlighting the contribution of biofuels to enhanced PM concentration at the location.δC-13(TC) values indicate dominance of freshly emitted aerosols from local sources and the significant impact of biomass and biofuel combustion during different seasons.

Summary: The study estimated the impact of air pollution on human health and the economy in India. In 2019, air pollution led to 1.67 million deaths and an economic loss of $36.8 billion, accounting for 1.36% of India's GDP. The economic impact varied significantly among states, with low per-capita GDP states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar experiencing the highest losses.
