Understanding the influence of summer biomass burning on air quality in North India: Eight cities field campaign study

Khaiwal Ravindra et al.

Summary: Near real-time monitoring of major air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM10, PM2.5, PM1), trace gases (O3, CO, NO, NO2, NOx, NH3, CO2, SO2), and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), was conducted in eight cities in the Indo-Gangetic Plain region during the wheat crop residue burning period. The study found that the semi-urban region had the highest concentration of PM10 and PM2.5, while the urban region had the lowest concentrations during the early phase of the campaign. The results also showed that diverse sources such as crop residue burning, solid biomass fuels, vehicles, and industries significantly contributed to the degradation of regional air quality.

Potential Role of Biochar on Capturing Soil Nutrients, Carbon Sequestration and Managing Environmental Challenges: A Review

Zouhair Elkhlifi et al.

Summary: The properties of biochar and their effects on agricultural soil health and environmental ecosystems depend on the feedstock, residence time, and pyrolysis conditions. Biochar can remove organic and inorganic contaminants from the soil as an adsorbent and improve soil quality, microbial activities, and carbon content. One of the great impacts of biochar is its ability to capture soil nutrients and sequester carbon.

Targeting yield and reducing nitrous oxide emission by use of single and double inhibitor treated urea during winter wheat season in Northern Germany

Kang Ni et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different forms of nitrogen fertilizers (nitrate vs. ammoniacal nitrogen) and urease inhibitors on N2O emission and crop yield. The results showed no significant difference in N2O emissions between calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) and urea, but the addition of the nitrification inhibitor, DCD/TZ, significantly reduced N2O emissions. The addition of urease inhibitors did not further reduce N2O emissions, but it improved crop yield and nitrogen utilization efficiency.

Dry rainfed conditions are key drivers of the effect of conservation tillage and a nitrification inhibitor on N fate and N2O emissions: A field 15N tracing study

Sandra Garcia-Gutierrez et al.

Summary: The sustainability of rainfed crops under semiarid conditions is threatened by low plant nitrogen (N) recovery and potential loss of reactive N to the environment. A field 15N tracing experiment on barley was conducted to study the effect of different tillage management practices and the use of the nitrification inhibitor DMPSA on N fate. The results showed that DMPSA modulates the nitrification process and affects soil residual N, cumulative N2O emissions, and plant N recovery. Combining DMPSA with no tillage (NT) can improve plant N uptake from endogenous soil-N and help mitigate reactive N loss and climate change.

Can a urease inhibitor improve the efficacy of nitrogen use under perennial ryegrass temperate grazing conditions?

A. Murray et al.

Summary: This study compared the efficiency of different nitrogen fertilizer forms in perennial ryegrass fields grazed by dairy cows or sheep under Irish conditions. The results showed that using calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) and urea protected with NBPT had better effects than urea, and the application of 250 kg N/ha was more effective than 150 kg N/ha. Overall, the use of protected urea was beneficial for long-term crop production compared to urea.

Summary: Meta-analysis of 50 articles found that the use of nitrification inhibitors (NIs) can increase crop yield and soil NH4+ concentrations, while reducing N2O emissions and soil NO3- concentrations, with no effect on ammonia volatilization. The effectiveness of NIs in tropical agroecosystems in Brazil is similar to previous meta-analyses conducted in temperate climates, indicating that NI application is an efficient strategy to delay nitrification and mitigate N2O emissions.

Contribution of Ammonium-Induced Nitrifier Denitrification to N2O in Paddy Fields

Yu Qin et al.

Summary: Paddy fields are a significant source of nitrous oxide (N2O), with biotic processes dominating N2O production. Heterotrophic denitrification (HD) is the main process generating N2O, while nitrifier denitrification (ND) also contributes to N2O production. Ammonium content and the ratio of total organic matter to nitrate are important factors affecting the contribution ratios of different N2O production pathways.

Polyester Microplastic Mitigated NH3 Volatilization from a Rice- Wheat Rotation System: Does Particle Size or Natural Aging Effect Matter?

Lanfang Han et al.

Summary: The accumulation of microplastics in agricultural soils has been found to have negative effects on soil ecosystem functions, specifically in the volatilization of ammonia (NH3). This study focused on the response mechanism of NH3 volatilization to the occurrence of different sizes of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics and the role of natural aging. Results showed that both PET10 and PET200 reduced NH3 volatilization in the rice-wheat rotation cycle soil system. PET200 exhibited a more significant reduction in NH3 volatilization and was related to its higher adsorption capacity for NH4+-N and the formation of microaggregates.

Summary: This study conducted a global meta-analysis to explore the effects of drainage on rice yield and greenhouse gas emissions in paddy systems. The results showed that implementing drainage had a minimal impact on yield but significantly reduced CH4 emissions, especially in soils with higher pH and organic carbon content. Extending the duration and increasing the frequency of drainage increased N2O emissions but contributed to a better reduction in CH4 emissions. Implementing drainage in paddy systems with organic amendment achieved greater overall greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
