An innovative biofilter technology for reducing environmental spreading of emerging pollutants and odour emissions during municipal sewage treatment

M. De Sanctis et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effectiveness of the recently developed MULESL technology in removing CECs and limiting odour emissions. Results showed that MULESL technology was much more effective in removing 60% of the identified compounds compared to traditional WWTPs, attributed to factors such as high sludge retention time and biomass concentration. Furthermore, odour impact analysis indicated that MULESL had a significantly lower impact compared to conventional WWTP treatments.

Recent advances and viability in sustainable thermochemical conversion of sludge to bio-fuel production

Prateek Gururani et al.

Summary: Thermochemical methods offer a promising solution for managing sludge by converting it into bio-fuel through processes such as pyrolysis, gasification, and hydrothermal liquefaction. This review highlights the working mechanisms of these processes, their efficiency in sludge conversion, and the potential challenges and future prospects. Hydrothermal liquefaction has shown to be more efficient than other thermochemical technologies in producing high yields of bio-fuel from sludge.

Sorption of organochlorine pesticides on polyethylene microplastics in soil suspension

Chengli Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics have a good adsorption effect on OCPs in soil, with equilibrium adsorption taking 12 hours and the process described by a pseudo-second-order model. The Freundlich model is more suitable for describing the adsorption isotherm data, indicating that the process occurs on the non-uniform surface of microplastics. Additionally, microplastics showed better adsorption effects on OCPs when the solution/soil ratio was between 75:1 and 100:1, and as the diameter of microplastics increased, the adsorption capacity decreased.
