Quaternary ammonium compounds promoted anoxic sludge granulation and altered propagation risk of intracellular and extracellular antibiotic resistance genes

Mingyan Zhao et al.

Summary: Surfactants can affect sludge morphology and disinfectants are connected to antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Therefore, further investigation is needed to understand the impact of long-term exposure to quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) on activated sludge and ARGs. This study examined the effects of different QACs on denitrification and observed an inhibitory effect ranking of DADMAC C12 > BAC C12 > ATMAC C12. DADMAC C12 also promoted the formation of granular sludge and the proliferation of extracellular ARGs.

Enriched autoinducer-2 (AI-2)-based quorum quenching consortium in a ceramic anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) for biofouling retardation

Boyan Xu et al.

Summary: This study enriched a facultative QQ consortium for AI-2-based QS disruption and discovered its quorum quenching performance in an AnMBR for membrane fouling retardation. The QQ consortium was able to degrade DPD and prolong membrane filtration operation in treating domestic wastewater. QQ reduced the content of proteins and carbohydrates and altered the composition of EPS and SMP. Moreover, QQ decreased the quantity of organics and planktonic microorganisms in the supernatant and enhanced methane production while reducing sulfate reduction.

Nitric Oxide: A Neglected Driver for the Conjugative Transfer of Antibiotic Resistance Genes among Wastewater Microbiota

Haining Huang et al.

Summary: Nitric oxide (NO), an intermediate of the wastewater nitrogen cycle, significantly enhances the conjugative transfer of plasmids between different bacteria by increasing outer membrane permeability and activating global regulatory genes. The exposure to NO can pose risks in spreading antibiotic resistance genes among wastewater microbiota.

Nonnutritive sweeteners can promote the dissemination of antibiotic resistance through conjugative gene transfer

Zhigang Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that commonly used nonnutritive sweeteners may enhance plasmid-mediated conjugative transfer between bacteria, increasing the spread of antibiotic resistance genes. Bacteria exposed to these compounds produced more reactive oxygen species, triggered the SOS response, and experienced increased cell membrane permeability.

The effect of sublethal concentrations of benzalkonium chloride on the LuxS/AI-2 quorum sensing system, biofilm formation and motility of Escherichia coli

Tao Yu et al.

Summary: Sublethal concentrations of benzalkonium chloride can promote AI-2 production, enhance biofilm formation, and increase swimming motility of E. coli isolates, along with upregulating genes associated with biofilm formation and flagellar motility. Proper use of this disinfectant in food processing environments is crucial for controlling E. coli contamination.
