Photochemical persistence of sulfa drugs in aqueous medium: kinetic study and mathematical simulations

Arlen Mabel Lastre-Acosta et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photochemical behavior of sulfa drugs in aqueous medium and found that hydroxyl radicals and chromophoric dissolved organic matter play key roles in sulfonamide degradation. The photodegradation of SDZ and SMX was significantly enhanced in natural water samples compared to pure water, with predicted half-life times varying depending on water depth, species concentration, and heterocyclic substituent.

Photolytic kinetics of pharmaceutically active compounds from upper to lower estuarine waters: Roles of triplet-excited dissolved organic matter and halogen radicals

Zhichao Hou et al.

Summary: The study found that sulfamethazine undergoes rapid photodegradation in lower estuarine waters, while the photolytic rate of carbamazepine is inversely proportional to the salinity of the estuarine waters. Experiments suggest that the multivariate effects of triplet-excited E-DOM* and halide ions enhance the photolysis of sulfamethazine, while E-3-DOM* is the main factor affecting the photodegradation of carbamazepine.

Sorption of sulfadiazine and flow modeling in an alluvial deposit of a dry riverbed in the Brazilian semiarid

Ana Emilia Carvalho de Gusmao da Cunha Rabelo et al.

Summary: The Brazilian semiarid region faces challenges of irregular rainfall, prolonged droughts, and high temperatures, limiting surface water accumulation. Livestock activities in the valleys contribute to the excessive use of veterinary antibiotics, leading to groundwater contamination. The study evaluates the sorption potential of Sulfadiazine (SDZ) and the dynamics of water transfer and solute transport processes in an alluvial deposit in the Capibaribe River.

Dawning of a new ERA: Environmental Risk Assessment of antibiotics and their potential to select for antimicrobial resistance

Aimee K. Murray et al.

Summary: Antibiotics and antimicrobials are widely used, misused and overused in human and veterinary medicine, animal husbandry and aquaculture, potentially leading to the enrichment of antimicrobial resistant bacteria in the environment. There is a need to develop a new methodology for environmental risk assessment to ensure that diffuse and point source discharges are safe choices.

Degradation and transformation of norfloxacin in medium-pressure ultraviolet/peracetic acid process: An investigation of the role of pH

Xiuwei Ao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the degradation of norfloxacin (NOR) using the MPUV/PAA process, with higher degradation efficiency observed at pH 7 and 9, possibly due to the impact of pH on the ionic forms of NOR and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Additionally, it was found that center dot OH is primarily responsible for degradation at pH 5, while organic radicals are mainly responsible at pH 7 and 9.
