Contribution of glaciers to water, energy and food security in mountain regions: current perspectives and future priorities

Caroline Clason et al.

Summary: Mountain glaciers are essential for freshwater supply, impacting water, energy, and food security for hundreds of millions of people. Assessing the decrease in glacial meltwater and its impact on resource security is crucial for managing changing freshwater dynamics in a warming world. Understanding the flow of water, sediment, and contaminants through glacial systems is necessary for evaluating meltwater contribution to downstream resource security. This paper discusses the socio-environmental role of glacier-fed waters, research priorities for assessing meltwater quantity and quality, and the importance of a transdisciplinary and inclusive research approach.

Legacy radionuclides in cryoconite and proglacial sediment on Orwell Glacier, Signy Island, Antarctica

Philip N. Owens et al.

Summary: Research has found that cryoconite on glaciers contains significantly higher concentrations of fallout radionuclides compared to moraine and suspended sediment. This suggests that cryoconite can scavenge fallout radionuclides from glacial meltwater, posing a potential risk to downstream terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.

Determination of plutonium in cryoconite on glacier surfaces in the northeast Tibetan Plateau: Implications for source identification and accumulation

Liguo Cao et al.

Summary: Cryoconite, dark sediments on the surface of glaciers, has exceptional capacity to accumulate plutonium isotopes, which are derived from global fallout and Chinese nuclear test sites. These findings are important for understanding the fate of plutonium isotopes in the cryosphere and for future radioactivity evaluation.

Unveiling the extreme environmental radioactivity of cryoconite from a Norwegian glacier

Edyta Lokas et al.

Summary: This study provides the first survey of the occurrence of artificial and natural radionuclides in Norwegian cryoconitc. The concentrations of radionuclides in cryoconite samples from the Blaisen Glacier were found to be extremely high, primarily due to bioaccumulation in organic-rich cryoconite and enhanced by contamination transfers from the tundra by lemmings.

Anthropogenic contaminants in glacial environments I: Inputs and accumulation

Dylan B. Beard et al.

Summary: Glaciers can accumulate and store contaminants, including fallout radionuclides, microplastics, persistent organic pollutants, potentially toxic elements, black carbon, and nitrate-based contaminants. However, their dynamics and role in glaciated systems are still poorly understood. Assessing and quantifying contaminant levels within the cryosphere is important to fully understand and mitigate current and future threats.

Anthropogenic contaminants in glacial environments II: Release and downstream consequences

Dylan B. Beard et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic contamination has been detected in glacial and proglacial environments, posing potential risks to water, food, and energy security for millions of people. Understanding the mechanisms of contaminant release and their impacts is crucial for developing effective policies and strategies to mitigate future risks.

Accelerated global glacier mass loss in the early twenty-first century

Romain Hugonnet et al.

Summary: The study found that glaciers around the world are melting at an accelerated rate, with contrasting patterns of mass loss in different geographical regions. Overall, glaciers are losing mass more rapidly, with similar or even larger acceleration rates than Greenland or Antarctic ice sheets taken separately. These findings also highlight the importance of understanding drivers that influence glacier change to predict future changes and mitigate the impacts of sea-level rise.

Summary: EPSs produced by microbial and algal communities in Antarctic ecosystems play a crucial role in adapting to extreme environmental conditions and exhibit diverse ecological and protective functions. They have significant impacts on processes such as aggregation of dust particles on glacier surfaces, reduction of albedo, and acceleration of glacier melting.

Accumulation of legacy fallout radionuclides in cryoconite on Isfallsglaciaren (Arctic Sweden) and their downstream spatial distribution

Caroline C. Clason et al.

Summary: The release of legacy contaminants in response to glacier retreat has not received enough attention yet. Evidence shows significantly augmented activities of fallout radionuclides in cryoconite in multiple regions of the global cryosphere. Future research should focus on the accumulation processes of radionuclides and other environmental contaminants in cryoconite.

A worldwide meta-analysis (1977-2020) of sediment core dating using fallout radionuclides including 137Cs and 210Pbxs

Anthony Foucher et al.

Summary: The dating of recent sediment archives is crucial for environmental and climatic reconstructions, often using radiocaesium (Cs-137) and excess lead-210 (Pb-210(xs)). This review of 573 articles published between 1977 and 2020 provides a comprehensive synthesis of fallout radionuclide analyses used for dating sediment cores. It identifies key fallout events and provides a global reference for Cs-137 peak attribution in sediment core dating.

A global dataset of atmospheric 7Be and 210Pb measurements: annual air concentration and depositional flux

Fule Zhang et al.

Summary: The study presents a global dataset of air concentration and depositional flux measurements of Be-7 and Pb-210, collected from research communities worldwide, which can be used to trace the behavior of atmospheric aerosols and soil redistribution processes on Earth’s surface. The dataset, archived and freely available for the scientific community, serves as baseline data for future research.
