Deposition effect of inhaled particles in the human: Accurate health risks of personal exposure to PAHs and their derivatives from residential solid fuel combustion

Rong Feng et al.

Summary: A drastic household clean heating renovation has been undertaken in rural northern China since 2017, which aims to improve indoor air quality. The study incorporates the deposition efficiency of particulate matters (PMs) in the human respiratory tract to assess the health risks of homemakers inhaling polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emitted from different solid fuels. The results demonstrate that using clean coal significantly reduces the exposure levels of PAHs, and replacing biomass and raw coal chunk with clean coal greatly decreases the cancer risks.

Insights into adsorption mechanisms of nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on common microplastic particles: Experimental studies and modeling

Xiangcheng Kong et al.

Summary: Nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) and microplastics (MPs) are emerging contaminants that pose a threat to the aquatic ecosystem. Understanding the interaction between NPAHs and MPs is important for determining their fate and risks in the natural environment. The adsorption behavior and mechanism of NPAHs on microplastics were investigated, revealing that the adsorption process is controlled by chemical adsorption and hydrophobic partition, with adsorption capacity dependent on the hydrophobicity of NPAHs. In complex environments, microplastics show high adsorption capacity for organic pollutants, and smaller compounds are more easily adsorbed due to their size.

Distribution pattern of polycyclic aromatic compounds in coal gangue from coal city-East China

Dandan Xu et al.

Summary: This study collected 30 fresh and weathered coal gangue samples from three mine areas in Huaibei, Anhui province, China, and used gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry to analyze 30 polycyclic aromatic compounds. The results showed that multiple polycyclic aromatic compounds existed in coal gangue, with a-PAHs having higher content than 16PAHs. Coal type influenced the content, type, and distribution pattern of these compounds. This study provides new insights for analyzing existing pollution sources.

Placental levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their association with birth weight of infants

Priyanka Agarwal et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the association between in-utero exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and infant birth weight. The results showed the presence of various PAHs in placental tissue, with pyrogenic PAHs being the predominant source of exposure in the studied population. Regression analysis revealed an inverse correlation between certain PAHs and birth weight, and a significant association between fluoranthene and the depletion trend of birth weight.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and its effects on human health: An overeview

Manthar Ali Mallah et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are chemical contaminants of environmental significance. PAH pollution mainly comes from anthropogenic sources and can pose a significant threat to human health. Long-term exposure to PAHs can lead to tumor development in multiple organs and increase the risk of lung cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Studies have shown a relationship between PAH exposure, oxidative stress, and atherosclerosis.

Variations of Personal Exposure to Particulate Nitrated Phenols from Heating Energy Renovation in China: The First Assessment on Associated Toxicological Impacts with Particle Size Distributions

Rong Feng et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the substitution of raw coal chunk and biomass by advanced clean coal can effectively reduce particulate matter (PM) and nitrated phenols (NPs) in personal exposure samples. It also shows that the clean coal can efficiently decrease interleukin-6 (IL-6) and 8-hydrox-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) levels in urine and saliva. Furthermore, the study reveals a strong particle size dependence between NPs and biomarkers.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the relationship between exposure in pregnant women's activity spaces and their personal PM2.5 exposure. The study found that indoor PM2.5 sources, parity, and home ventilation were significantly associated with personal exposure. Exposure to roads in activity spaces was positively associated with personal PM2.5 exposure, while greenness was negatively associated. The final model explained 34% of the variability in personal PM2.5 concentrations.

Potential Toxicity Risk Assessment and Priority Control Strategy for PAHs Metabolism and Transformation Behaviors in the Environment

Lei Zhao et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively evaluated the transformation and metabolism processes of 16 selected PAHs and assessed their potential toxicity and risks using various models and platforms. Among the 473 PAH by-products, most exhibited higher neurotoxicity, immunotoxicity, and phytotoxicity. Additionally, several PAH transformation products were found to possess developmental toxicity, genotoxicity, carcinogenicity, and endocrine-disrupting effects. Based on the probability and degree of toxic risk, a priority control strategy for PAHs was established.

PAHs bound to submicron particles in rural Chinese homes burning solid fuels

Weijian Liu et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentration of PM1.0-PAH28 is higher in rural households, with more severe pollution in winter in northern regions and cleaner air in eastern areas due to the use of clean energy. Indoor air contains higher levels of toxic congeners compared to outdoor air, primarily sourced from solid fuel combustion. Transitioning to cleaner energy can significantly reduce indoor pollution risks.
